Family Reunion on the North Carolina Coast

Reunly Planning Team ยท April 2026

The North Carolina coast is one of the great American family-rental-house destinations, especially for groups of 20 to 50. The first decision is which stretch of coast: the Outer Banks, the Crystal Coast, or the Wilmington and Brunswick area each offer a different reunion experience.

The Outer Banks (the OBX) runs from Corolla and Duck in the north down through Nags Head, Hatteras, and Ocracoke. It is the classic beach-house-rental coast and the houses go very large: 8, 10, even 24 bedroom rentals are common, with private pools, game rooms, and ocean views. This is what makes the Outer Banks the natural fit for a multi-generational family reunion that wants everyone under one roof for a week.

The Crystal Coast (Atlantic Beach, Emerald Isle, Beaufort, Morehead City) is quieter and more laid-back than the OBX, with shorter drives from major airports and a slightly less expensive rental market. It is a strong choice for families who want a beach week without the OBX summer-Saturday traffic on Route 12.

The Wilmington and Brunswick Islands area (Wrightsville, Carolina Beach, Kure Beach, Oak Island, Sunset Beach) is the easiest stretch of coast to reach by air (ILM airport is right there), and Wilmington itself gives you a real downtown with restaurants and a riverwalk for an evening or two. Rental homes are a touch smaller on average than the OBX but the area is much more accessible.

What Kind of Reunion Fits the NC Coast

All three regions are built for the same reunion pattern: a one-week beach-house rental, self-catered most nights with maybe one group restaurant dinner, days spent on the beach or pool, and an organized group photo or reunion meal toward the middle of the week. This works extremely well for 20 to 50 people. Smaller groups can find smaller houses, and groups over 50 typically book two adjacent oceanfront houses.

The North Carolina coast is not the right fit for a single-night or weekend gathering. The economics of a 12 bedroom oceanfront rental only make sense across a full week or close to it. If you only have a long weekend, a Wilmington or Beaufort hotel block plus a single big rental for the daytime hangout is a better pattern than trying to book a weekly rental for three nights.

Saturday-to-Saturday is the standard rental week across most of the NC coast. Many of the largest properties only book weekly bookings during summer. If midweek arrivals are non-negotiable for some of your relatives, factor that into your venue search early, because mid-week starts dramatically narrow your options in July.

Logistics That Actually Matter

Weather window

Mid-May through mid-October is swimmable. June and September are the sweet spots: warm water, fewer crowds, and lower rental prices than peak July. Hurricane risk climbs through August and September.

Airport access

OBX: Norfolk (ORF) is closest at about 90 min, Raleigh (RDU) is 4 hours. Crystal Coast: New Bern (EWN) at 45 min or Raleigh at 2.5 hours. Wilmington area: ILM is right there.

Drive times

Norfolk to Duck: 90 min. Norfolk to Hatteras: 3 to 3.5 hr. Raleigh to Atlantic Beach: 2.5 hr. Raleigh to Wilmington: 2 hr.

  • 1

Book your rental house at least 9 to 12 months ahead for prime summer weeks. The largest oceanfront houses on the OBX commonly book a full year in advance, and the best ones on Duck or Corolla can book 14 to 18 months out.

  • 2

Be honest about hurricane season. August and September are statistically the peak risk months. Most rental contracts have a mandatory evacuation clause that allows partial refunds if a state-issued evacuation is called, but coverage varies. Read the contract or buy travel insurance.

  • 3

If the family includes very young children or anyone with mobility limits, choose a house with an elevator. The classic OBX rental has the kitchen and main living area on the top floor for the views, which means three flights of stairs from the cars to dinner.

  • 4

Reserve a one-night midweek group restaurant dinner well in advance. Beach-town restaurants do not handle 30-top walk-ins on a summer Wednesday. Even at six weeks out, the good spots may not have a private room.

  • 5

If you are bringing kayaks, bikes, or beach gear, almost every NC coast town has rental delivery services that drop everything at the house on Saturday and pick it up the following Saturday. Often this is far cheaper and easier than transporting your own.

North Carolina Coast Reunion Budget Ballpark

A week-long beach house reunion on the NC coast typically lands at $400 to $800 per person, all in, for a group of 25 to 40 people sharing one or two large rentals and self-catering most meals. Peak summer OBX oceanfront pricing pushes the upper end. Shoulder season (early June or mid-September) can come in at 25 to 40 percent less. Wilmington-area hotel-block reunions for shorter stays generally run $250 to $450 per person for a three-night weekend.

Reunly is free to plan with. When your group is ready to coordinate RSVPs, meals, and the budget itself, the app is a $39 one-time fee per reunion or $79 per year for unlimited reunions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Outer Banks, Crystal Coast, or Wilmington area: which is best for a family reunion?

Outer Banks for the largest rental houses and the classic week-on-the-beach experience, especially if you have 30 or more people and want everyone under one roof. Crystal Coast for a quieter, less crowded version of the same pattern with shorter drives. Wilmington area for groups flying in (ILM airport is right there), groups that want a real downtown for an evening out, and shorter stays.

When is the best time of year for an NC coast reunion?

Mid-May through mid-October is swimmable. June and September are the sweet spots: warm water, fewer crowds, and lower rental prices than peak July and early August. Hurricane risk rises in August and September, so if you book those months, plan accordingly and read the rental contract evacuation clause carefully.

How far in advance do we need to book a big oceanfront rental?

9 to 12 months for a normal summer week. 14 to 18 months for the largest oceanfront houses on the most desirable Outer Banks streets in Duck or Corolla. If you want a specific property for a specific week in July, treat the day-after-this-year as your booking deadline.

Do we have to book Saturday to Saturday?

On the Outer Banks and most of the Crystal Coast, yes during peak summer. Many of the largest houses only sell weekly Saturday-to-Saturday bookings in July and August. Shoulder season is more flexible. Wilmington area properties are more often available for shorter stays year round.

How much does a North Carolina coast family reunion cost per person?

$400 to $800 per person all-in for a week-long beach house reunion of 25 to 40 people sharing rentals and self-catering most meals. Shoulder season can come in 25 to 40 percent below that. A shorter Wilmington-area hotel-block weekend runs $250 to $450 per person for three nights.
