Family Reunion Tropical Theme: Luau, Tiki, Beach

Reunly Planning Team·April 2026·8 min read

The tropical / luau theme is the most universally crowd-pleasing summer reunion theme. Easy to decorate, photographs beautifully, and has a built-in food and music direction. Here's the complete playbook.

For other theme options, see our parent guide on family reunion themes. Pair with games and activities for activity ideas.

Why a Tropical Theme Works

Three reasons it lands across age groups: (1) decorations are inexpensive and widely available; (2) the food maps cleanly to a summer outdoor menu (grilled meats, fresh fruit, cold drinks); (3) costumes are low-stakes - a flower lei is a costume, and even reluctant uncles will wear a Hawaiian shirt.

It works particularly well for first-time-themed reunions where you want a clear visual but don't want to ask 80 people to commit to a costume. The bar is low. The payoff is high.

Decorations Under $200

  • Leis ($15-25 for 50): One per guest at check-in. Oriental Trading or Amazon. Mixed colors look better than uniform pink.
  • Grass table skirts ($20-30): Wrap any rectangular table. Instantly says "luau."
  • Paper palm leaves ($15): Pin to walls, drape from rafters, scatter on tables.
  • Tiki torches or LED tiki torches ($40-80 for 6): Mark the perimeter of the seating area. LEDs are safer if kids are around.
  • Inflatable palm trees ($25-40): Two of them flanking the food table create a photo backdrop.
  • Paper umbrellas for drinks ($10): 100 of them. Adds 30% to the visual at minimal cost.
  • String lights ($20-40): Especially for evening - tropical theme demands warm light.
  • Pineapple centerpieces ($15-25): Real pineapples (later eaten) or plastic ones with paper-flower bases.

The Music Playlist

Mix three eras for a 4-hour playlist:

  • Classic Hawaiian (anchors): Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwoʻole, Don Ho, Hawaiian slack-key guitar instrumentals.
  • Beach pop (the singalong): Beach Boys, Jimmy Buffett, the Mamas & the Papas, Toots and the Maytals reggae crossovers.
  • Modern tropical (the energy): Bruno Mars (Finesse, 24K Magic), Kygo, Calvin Harris "Summer," tropical house tracks.

Spotify's "Tropical House" and "Beach Vibes" playlists are solid starts. Layer in 10-15 Hawaiian classics for emotional grounding.

Food: Tropical Menu by People-Count

Drinks (Mocktail-Friendly)

Set up a self-serve drink station with two pitcher options that have alcoholic and non-alcoholic versions of the same flavor profile:

  • Pineapple-coconut punch (kid version): Pineapple juice + coconut water + sparkling water + frozen fruit ice cubes.
  • Piña colada (adult version): Same ingredients + dark rum, blended with ice.
  • Mango-lime mocktail: Mango nectar + lime + club soda + mint.
  • Hibiscus iced tea: Brewed hibiscus tea + a splash of lime + cane sugar to taste.
  • Beer cooler: Local lagers and a few tropical-leaning IPAs.

Garnish with paper umbrellas and a fruit slice on every drink. Photo-friendly, and the visual cue makes the theme stick.

Dress Code

Optional but encouraged. The full tropical wardrobe is: Hawaiian shirts (or floral dresses), shorts, sandals, flower hair clips, leis (provided at check-in). Three tiers of participation are fine - some guests go full luau, some wear a flowered shirt, some just put on the lei you handed them.

For coordinated branch colors layered on top of the tropical theme, see our guide on family reunion color themes.

Kid-Friendly Tropical Activities

  • Limbo contest: A bamboo pole and a Spotify playlist of limbo classics. Run during dinner.
  • Hula hoop contest: Five hula hoops from the dollar store. Last kid still hooping wins.
  • Lei-making station: Artificial flowers + plastic needle + string. Kids spend 30+ minutes making necklaces and crowns.
  • Coconut bowling: Paint 6 coconuts (or use balls) and 10 empty 2-liter water bottles. Cheap, photogenic, kids love it.
  • Sand-art bottles: Layer colored sand into clear plastic bottles. $20 in supplies for 20 kids. Take-home keepsake.
  • Pool noodle Olympics: Use pool noodles for jousting (gentle), relay races, and obstacle courses.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What food works for a luau reunion?

Pulled pork or kalua pig, Hawaiian rolls, grilled pineapple, mango salsa, coconut rice, teriyaki skewers, fruit platters, and shave ice. For 50 people: 12-15 lbs pulled pork, 2 large fruit platters, 50 skewers.

Where do I get cheap luau decorations?

Oriental Trading and Amazon have full kits for $30-60. Dollar store carries leis at 6 for $1. For larger budgets ($150-200), add light-up tiki torches and rented palm trees.

What music goes with a tropical reunion?

Mix three eras: classic Hawaiian (IZ, Don Ho), beach pop (Beach Boys, Buffett), modern tropical (Kygo, Bruno Mars). Spotify 'Tropical House' and 'Beach Vibes' are good starts.

Can a tropical theme work indoors?

Yes - actually easier indoors because you control lighting and weather. String lights, paper palm leaves on walls, coconut candles. Indoor luaus often photograph better.

What kid activities fit?

Limbo, hula hoop, lei-making, coconut bowling, sand-art bottles, pool noodle Olympics. Flower crowns and lei stations especially work for ages 5-10.
