Black Canyon of the Gunnison is the narrowest, deepest, and most dramatic canyon in the Lower 48 — at one point only 40 feet wide at the river but 1,820 feet deep. The Gunnison River drops more in 48 miles than the Mississippi does in 1,500. For reunions, the South Rim is the easy choice: a 7-mile rim road with 12 overlooks, almost all drive-up with short paved paths. Crowds are tiny compared to Rocky Mountain or the Utah parks, the gateway town of Montrose handles any group size, and an afternoon at the rim is the kind of jaw-dropping experience even teenagers stop and stare at.

When to go

Mid-May through October. South Rim Road is open year-round but only the first overlook is plowed in winter. Summer days are warm (80s) but the elevation keeps it more comfortable than Utah. September is the sweet spot — cool, clear, and quiet.

Best for your group size

Small group · 10–25

Groups of 10-25 fit easily in 4-5 Montrose hotel rooms or a single large vacation rental.

Medium group · 25–60

Groups of 25-60 should block-book a Montrose hotel (Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Best Western Plus all handle group blocks) and add 1-2 large rentals.

Large group · 60+

Groups of 60+ may want to base in Grand Junction (1.5 hr) for more lodging and dining; Black Canyon is then a single-day excursion.

Reunion organizer tips

Use Black Canyon as a reunion add-on, not the centerpiece. The park is small (you can drive South Rim Road end-to-end in a half day) and most reunion groups visit en route between Mesa Verde, Moab, or Rocky Mountain. A 1-2 night stop in Montrose works well.

Stick to the South Rim. The North Rim is dramatic but accessed via a long gravel road from Crawford and has no visitor services. South Rim has the visitor center, paved overlooks, and a 7-mile drive that hits every major view — the right choice for a multi-generational group.

Plan a half-day overlook tour. Drive South Rim Road from the visitor center to the end, stopping at every overlook. Most stops are 30 seconds to 2 minutes from parking. Pack a picnic for High Point or Sunset View at the end of the road.

Stay in Montrose for the lodging supply. Montrose has 20+ hotels (Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Best Western Plus), several large vacation rentals, restaurants, and a Walmart. The town is 15 minutes from the park entrance and the closest airport (MTJ) has direct flights from Denver.

Pair Black Canyon with Mesa Verde on a southern Colorado reunion. They're 2.5 hours apart and complement each other — Mesa Verde is the depth of human history; Black Canyon is the depth of geologic history. 3 nights Mesa Verde + 2 nights Black Canyon makes a great 5-night reunion.

Watch the kids near the rim. Many of the South Rim overlooks have minimal railings (or none) and 1,000+ ft drops. The park is safe with normal supervision but you do need to watch toddlers and over-excited kids carefully.

Frequently asked

When is the best time for a Black Canyon reunion?

Mid-May through October. South Rim Road is open year-round but only the first overlook is plowed in winter. September is the sweet spot — cool, clear weather, golden cottonwoods, and almost no crowds.

How far in advance should we book?

Montrose lodging is much easier than Utah park gateways — 2-4 months ahead is usually plenty for groups under 30. Larger groups should book 4-6 months out.

How much does a Black Canyon reunion cost per person?

Among the cheapest national park reunions in the West. Plan $100-220/person/day for Montrose lodging plus meals and activities. Park entry is $30/vehicle for 7 days.

Is the park accessible for older relatives?

Excellent for accessibility — the visitor center, Tomichi Point, Pulpit Rock, Chasm View, and several other overlooks have paved wheelchair-accessible paths. Almost every major view is drive-up with under a minute of walking.

Should we visit the North Rim?

Probably not for a reunion. The North Rim has no visitor services and is accessed via a long gravel road from Crawford. The South Rim has the visitor center, paved overlooks, and the same dramatic views — easier for any group.

Can we combine Black Canyon with other parks?

Yes — most reunion groups make Black Canyon a 1-2 night add-on. Common combinations: Mesa Verde (2.5 hr south), Rocky Mountain (5 hr northeast), or as a stop on a Denver-to-Moab loop. The park itself is small enough that 1-2 days is usually enough.
