The Blue Mountains are the closest World Heritage wilderness to Sydney — 90 minutes west by car or 2 hours by Blue Mountains Line train. Reunions base in Katoomba (the Three Sisters, Scenic World, Echo Point) or quieter Leura, both at 1,000 m elevation with cool air, eucalyptus haze (the eponymous "blue"), and Federation-era guesthouses. Best as a 2–3 night extension on a Sydney reunion, or a winter destination in its own right (occasional snow July–August). Trains run hourly from Sydney Central to Katoomba.

When to go

March–May (autumn) for the European deciduous trees turning russet — Leura's Everglades Gardens are the photographer's favourite. September–November (spring) brings rhododendron and waratah blooms. June–August is winter (1–10 °C, occasional snow above 1,000 m, Yulefest celebrations in pubs). December–February is the cool summer escape from Sydney heat (12–25 °C, but watch for bushfire days). Avoid total fire ban days for any bushwalking.

Best for your group size

Small group · 10–25

Groups of 8–20: a Stayz heritage cottage in Leura or 4–6 rooms at The Carrington Hotel.

Medium group · 25–60

Groups of 20–40: book Lilianfels Blue Mountains Resort or split between two Stayz escarpment houses.

Large group · 60+

Groups of 40+: difficult at this size — Lilianfels handles 40–60 if you take it over, otherwise split between three Stayz houses in Leura.

Reunion organizer tips

Take the train. Blue Mountains Line departs Sydney Central hourly to Katoomba ($16.10 AUD adult, off-peak Opal cap on Sundays). Cars in town can't move on busy weekends; the train stops at Wentworth Falls, Leura, and Katoomba.

Book Lilianfels for a milestone-anniversary reunion (10–25 people) — heritage country-house feel, walking distance to Echo Point. Reserve 6–9 months ahead.

Or book a 6–8 bedroom Stayz house in Leura with a fireplace — winter reunions especially benefit from a single house with everyone gathered round the fire after dinner.

Scenic World is the canonical Blue Mountains reunion activity. The Cableway-Walkway-Railway loop takes ~2 hours and works with strollers, grandparents, and kids 4+. Buy timed tickets online.

Add a Jenolan Caves day for groups with cousins ages 8+. Closure note: Jenolan Caves Road has had access issues — verify the access route (often via Oberon detour) before booking.

Reunly works for the multi-stop NSW reunion — base in Sydney, side-trip to the Blue Mountains, then maybe to Hunter Valley or the South Coast. Track all of it in one workspace. /pricing.

Frequently asked

Train or hire a car?

Train if you're doing Katoomba/Leura villages and Scenic World. Hire a car if you're including Govetts Leap, Megalong Valley, or Jenolan Caves.

When is autumn colour at peak?

Mid-April to early May. Leura's deciduous trees and Everglades Gardens are spectacular.

Is winter snow reliable?

Light snow above 1,000 m happens a few times each winter (June–August), but it's not reliable. Frost overnight is essentially guaranteed; daytime is cold and crisp.

Are the bushwalks doable for grandparents?

Echo Point, Govetts Leap, the Skyway, and the upper Katoomba Falls section are all step-free or easy strolls. The Giant Stairway and Wentworth Falls full descent are not — older relatives skip those.

How much does a Blue Mountains reunion cost per person?

~$200–$420 AUD/person/day. Lilianfels and Hydro Majestic are premium; Stayz and Airbnb in Leura are mid-range; the train and most walks are cheap.

Does Reunly work for AU families?

Yes — currency-agnostic, SMS and email RSVPs, holiday-house cost-splitting. /pricing.
