Cuyahoga Valley is the surprise: a 33,000-acre national park sandwiched between Cleveland and Akron, with a working scenic railroad, a paved 19-mile rail-trail through the heart of the valley, and a 65-foot waterfall just off the road. For Midwestern families, this is one of the easiest reunion destinations in the country — direct flights to Cleveland (CLE) or Akron-Canton (CAK), no entrance fee, and Cleveland or Akron suburbs offer abundant hotel and rental lodging. The catch is there's no in-park lodging (except the Stanford House and Inn at Brandywine Falls — both small) so reunions stay in town and day-trip in.

When to go
May through October. Summer is comfortable (mid-80s) and all programs run. Mid-October fall color in the valley is excellent and short-lived. The CVSR Polar Express in December is a separate destination experience. Winter offers cross-country skiing on the Towpath.
Best for your group size
Small group · 10–25
Groups of 10–25 fit comfortably at the Stanford House (sleeps 30) or in 2–4 Independence-area hotel rooms or rental homes.
Medium group · 25–60
Groups of 25–60 should book a hotel block in Independence or Fairlawn (Akron) plus the Stanford House for the daily rendezvous, with the CVSR private train car as the centerpiece.
Large group · 60+
Groups of 60+ usually take a hotel block plus 2–3 large rental homes in Peninsula or Hudson; the park itself isn't a hotel destination, so plan to "commute" 10–15 minutes from your hotel.

Reunion organizer tips
Rent the Stanford House. It's a 1843 farmhouse inside the park that sleeps up to 30, with a big kitchen and lawn — built for reunions. Books up 12 months ahead, especially for summer weekends.
If Stanford is full, base in Independence or Peninsula. Both are within 10 minutes of multiple park trailheads, have hotels and Airbnb options, and put a Cleveland or Akron dinner within 25 minutes.
Build the reunion around a Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad ride. Booking a private group section or a themed ride (Grape Escape, Ales on Rails for adults; Day Out with Thomas or Polar Express for families) gives the reunion a single shared experience that holds every generation.
Use the Towpath as the connective tissue. Most relatives can ride or walk a 3–5 mile section between two trailheads, then meet for lunch in Peninsula or at Boston Mill. Multi-generational groups love it because grandparents on e-bikes go the same speed as kids on bikes.
Plan a Cleveland or Akron evening. The park itself doesn't have a downtown — but Ohio City (Cleveland), the West Side Market, or downtown Akron are all 25 minutes away and make for a great group dinner.
Don't overlook fall and winter. October weekends bring great color but smaller crowds than summer. December's Polar Express train rides are a memorable reunion if your family's schedule lines up — book in summer for December dates.

Frequently asked
When is the best time for a Cuyahoga Valley reunion?
May through October for the full menu of programs and comfortable weather. Mid-October fall color in the valley is excellent. December's Polar Express train ride is a unique winter reunion option — book in summer for December dates.
Where should we stay?
The Stanford House (in-park, sleeps 30) is the dream for reunions — book 12 months ahead. The Inn at Brandywine Falls is a small B&B inside the park. Otherwise: hotels and rental homes in Independence, Peninsula, Hudson, or Akron suburbs (Fairlawn, Montrose) — all 10–25 minutes from park trailheads.
Is Cuyahoga Valley accessible for older relatives or strollers?
Very. The Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail is flat, smooth, and largely wheelchair- and stroller-accessible for 19+ miles. Brandywine Falls has an accessible upper boardwalk. The CVSR scenic train has accessible cars. Skip the Ledges Trail for low-mobility relatives.
Do we need an entrance fee or reservations?
No entrance fee and no reservations to enter the park. The CVSR train, Hale Farm, and special events (concerts, themed rides) require tickets. Book CVSR group sections 3–6 months ahead for summer weekends.
Can we combine a CVNP reunion with Cleveland city stuff?
Easily — Cleveland is 25 minutes north. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, West Side Market, Cleveland Museum of Art, and Lake Erie waterfront all pair well with park days. A typical reunion does 2 park days and 1 Cleveland day.
What's the closest airport?
Cleveland-Hopkins (CLE) is 30 minutes from the park and has the most flight options. Akron-Canton (CAK) is 25 minutes from the south end. Pittsburgh (PIT) is 2 hours but sometimes has cheaper fares.
