Plan the loop around AKL arrival. Most overseas relatives fly into Auckland. Build the first 2 days in Auckland to fight jet lag, then move out — Bay of Islands (north) or Rotorua (south) — and end at Wellington for the South Island ferry or the WLG departure.
Pick 4 stops max in 7 days. The classic North Island reunion mistake is trying to fit 7 cities into 7 days. Better: Auckland 2 nights, Rotorua 2 nights, Taupo 1 night, Wellington 2 nights. Or: Auckland 3 nights, Bay of Islands 2 nights, Rotorua 2 nights.
Build in geothermal + Māori cultural early in the trip. Rotorua and Te Puia are best when the whanau is fresh — overseas relatives describe these as the most memorable days. Schedule them in the first half of the loop.
Use Hamilton or Tauranga as the half-way point. Both sit usefully between Auckland and Rotorua. Hamilton suits Hobbiton/Waitomo; Tauranga suits beach time.
