Hamilton (Kirikiriroa) is New Zealand's fourth-largest city and the central hub of the Waikato region. For reunions it sits in a useful spot: 90 minutes south of Auckland, 75 minutes from Hobbiton, 90 minutes from Waitomo Caves, and 90 minutes north of Rotorua. Hamilton itself is anchored by the Hamilton Gardens — five themed garden 'rooms' on the Waikato River that are unique in the world and consistently rank among the best free attractions in NZ. Hamilton works best as a 1-2 day base in the middle of a longer North Island whanau hui or as the first night out of Auckland.

Good for
- Reunions building a Hobbiton or Waitomo day into the schedule
- Whanau hui hosted on Waikato or King Country marae
- Affordable mid-size base between Auckland and Rotorua
- Reunions of 20–80 — Hamilton has reasonable hotel inventory and lower rates than Auckland
- Wedding-adjacent reunions (Waikato has many country wedding venues)
Practical logistics
- Closest Airports
- Hamilton (HLZ) — limited domestic flights. Most reunions fly into Auckland (AKL) and drive 90 min south.
- Group Lodging

- Parking
- Free or NZ$5–15/day. Hamilton is a flat, drivable city — easier than Auckland or Wellington.
- Accessibility
- Hamilton Gardens has sealed paths and is fully wheelchair-accessible. Most hotels and the riverside walks are flat.

When to go
November through April. The Waikato is the warmest, sunniest mainland NZ region in summer (avg 24°C / 75°F highs). The Hamilton Gardens are best November–March when most rooms are in bloom. Winter (June–August) is mild but wet and grey.
Best for your group size
Small group · 10–25
Groups of 10–25: a 5–8 room block at Novotel Tainui Hamilton or Distinction Hamilton.
Medium group · 25–60
Groups of 25–60: 12–20 rooms across two adjacent CBD hotels (Novotel Tainui + Hotel Ibis are next door).
Large group · 60+
Groups of 60+: combine the CBD hotel cluster with a Lake Karāpiro lodge for the day-of dinner. Hamilton lacks a single large convention hotel — splitting works.

Reunion organizer tips
Anchor the trip around Hamilton Gardens. It's free, world-class, and the natural site for a relaxed picnic-and-photo afternoon. Plan 2–3 hours minimum.
Book Hobbiton 8+ weeks out. Tours sell out, especially summer mornings. Pre-buy tickets for the whole group; no walk-up entry. Tours leave from Matamata (50 km east of Hamilton) every 30 minutes.
Pair Waitomo with the Hobbiton day or a Rotorua transfer. Most reunion organisers do Hobbiton-and-Waitomo together as a long day-trip from Hamilton, or hit Waitomo en route from Auckland to Rotorua.
Plan dinner at Victoria Street, not the suburbs. Hamilton's best independent restaurants (Palate, Gothenburg, The Hide) cluster on Victoria Street in the CBD — book 4 weeks ahead.
Use Hamilton as the last night before Rotorua. The 90-minute drive south to Rotorua is easy in the morning, leaving the full Rotorua day fresh.
If your whanau is hosting on a Waikato or King Country marae, base the manuhiri (visiting whanau) in Hamilton hotels and shuttle out to the marae for the formal hui — most marae don't have lodging for 60+ visitors.

Frequently asked
Should we base in Hamilton or just pass through?
Base in Hamilton if you're doing Hobbiton, Waitomo, and Hamilton Gardens. 2 nights is plenty. If your reunion is Auckland → Rotorua and you're skipping Hobbiton, you can pass through Hamilton without overnighting.
How do we book Hobbiton for a reunion?
Book direct at hobbitontours.com — group rates apply for 12+ people. Book 8+ weeks ahead in summer (Dec–Feb). Tours run every 30 minutes from Matamata; the 9:30 AM and 10:30 AM slots are best for combining with a Waitomo afternoon.
Can we do Hobbiton AND Waitomo in one day from Hamilton?
Yes, but it's a long day — 9:30 AM Hobbiton tour, lunch in Cambridge, 2:30 PM Waitomo, back to Hamilton by 5:30 PM. Doable for fit groups; older relatives may prefer to skip Waitomo and have a long lunch in Cambridge instead.
When is the best time for a Hamilton reunion?
November through April. The Hamilton Gardens are best Nov–March when in bloom. February has the most settled weather. Avoid winter unless you're willing to absorb wet, grey weather — Hamilton is in the Waikato basin and sees fog and drizzle through Jun–Aug.
How much does a Hamilton reunion cost per person?
Roughly NZ$200–340/person/day (~US$120–205) — the cheapest major North Island reunion city. Hobbiton tickets are NZ$120/adult; Waitomo Glowworm Caves NZ$60/adult.
