Fort Myers Beach occupies Estero Island on Florida's southwest Gulf Coast — a 7-mile barrier island that for decades was the most affordable Gulf beach vacation within driving distance of the Midwest. The Times Square area at the island's north end has always been the commercial hub, with its beachfront entertainment, watercraft rentals, and fishing pier. The south end transitions to quieter residential and vacation-rental neighborhoods that blend into Lovers Key State Park — a gem of an undeveloped barrier island just offshore.

Fort Myers Beach was heavily damaged by Hurricane Ian in September 2022 and has been in active rebuilding since. By 2024-2025 the major resort infrastructure (hotels, many restaurants, Times Square) had substantially recovered. Reunion groups visiting in 2026 should confirm their specific rentals' rebuild status, but the destination is broadly open for business. The Gulf beach itself — wide white sand, calm warm water — was unchanged by the hurricane.

What makes Fort Myers Beach compelling for reunions: proximity to both Sanibel Island (15 minutes north) and Lovers Key State Park (a few miles south), making it a natural base for exploring two of Florida's best natural barrier islands. The shelling is excellent throughout the region. The Fort Myers metro brings RSW airport within 30 minutes, and the combination of affordable rentals and natural Gulf beach makes it particularly attractive for large families who can't justify Sanibel's premium.

Reunion organizer tips

Confirm each rental's post-Ian rebuild status before booking. Most properties have been fully rebuilt or renovated, but a phone call to the rental manager is worth the 5 minutes.

Base at FMB and day-trip to Sanibel. Sanibel's rentals are more expensive; FMB makes a surprisingly good base for accessing both Sanibel and Lovers Key on day trips.

Lovers Key State Park is the underrated local gem. Pack a picnic, kayak through the back channels in the morning, and shell the Gulf beach in the afternoon — a full day without leaving the park.

The Edison & Ford Winter Estates is one of Florida's best historical sites and only 30 minutes from the island. The working botanical garden and lab are genuinely fascinating.
