Haleakalā protects the dormant 10,023-foot summit volcano that defines East Maui, plus the lush Kīpahulu coastal section reached via the famous Hāna Highway. The summit district is a Mars-meets-moon landscape of cinder cones and silversword plants; the Kīpahulu district is bamboo-and-waterfall rainforest at sea level. Be honest with the group: a Hawaii reunion is a heavy financial lift for mainland families, and Haleakalā cannot anchor a Maui trip the way a beach resort can. But if your reunion is committing to Maui anyway, Haleakalā is the genuine wow — a sunrise above the clouds and a Pīpīwai Trail bamboo-forest hike are universal-favorite memories.

Sunrise at the summit
A reservation-required pre-dawn drive to 10,023 feet for one of the most photographed sunrises in the world; book at recreation.gov 60 days ahead.
Official source ↗Sliding Sands (Keonehe'ehe'e) Trail
Iconic descent from the summit into the cinder-cone crater; even a 30-minute out-and-back gives the full Mars-landscape view.
Official source ↗Pīpīwai Trail to Waimoku Falls
4-mile out-and-back through bamboo forest to a 400-foot waterfall in the Kīpahulu district; the marquee Hāna Highway hike.
Official source ↗Kuloa Point loop and the Pools of 'Ohe'o
0.5-mile loop through coastal hau forest with views of the famous tiered pools — swimming sometimes restricted, check NPS.
Official source ↗Haleakalā Visitor Center
At 9,740 feet — exhibits, restrooms, ranger talks; the cinder-cone overlook a few steps away is the iconic Haleakalā photo.
Official source ↗Hosmer Grove birding loop
Half-mile loop through introduced conifer plantation, one of the most reliable native bird spots in Maui; campground here too.
Official source ↗Stargazing at the summit
Above-the-clouds darkness; clear nights show the Milky Way stretched horizon to horizon. Bring a real jacket — it is in the 30s.
Official source ↗Junior Ranger program
Free activity book at either visitor center; complete it for a Haleakalā Junior Ranger badge — kids 5-13.
Official source ↗Hāna Highway road trip
The 64-mile drive to Hāna and on to Kīpahulu is the experience itself — waterfalls, black sand beaches, and roadside fruit stands.
Official source ↗Silversword viewing
The endemic Haleakalā silversword grows only here; Kalahaku and the visitor-center area are the most reliable spots, especially in summer bloom.

Good for
- Reunions already committing to Maui
- Families with active teens and adults
- Stargazing and astrophotography enthusiasts
- Splurge-trip multi-generational reunions
- Hāna Highway road-trip lovers
Practical logistics
- Closest Airports
- Kahului, Maui (OGG) — 1.25 hr to summit, 2.5 hr to Kīpahulu via Hāna Highway
- Group Lodging
- No in-park lodging beyond primitive cabins (lottery only). Most reunions base at South Maui resorts (Wailea, Kīhei) or West Maui (Kāʻanapali). Vacation-rental compounds in Kula are the closest base to the summit.
- Cell Service
- Spotty in the summit district and on the Hāna Highway; reliable in Kahului and resort areas.
- Parking
- Sunrise reservations limit summit lots to capacity; mid-morning visitors find adequate parking. Kīpahulu fills 11 AM-2 PM in winter.
- Park Fee
- $30 per vehicle (3-day) or use an America the Beautiful annual pass.
- Accessibility
- Visitor centers and the summit overlook are accessible. Pīpīwai is rocky and stepped; not wheelchair-accessible.
- Official Site

When to go
Year-round, but spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) hit the sweet spot of dry weather and lighter crowds. Avoid the summit when storms are forecast — winter snow and freezing rain happen. The Hāna Highway is best in dry conditions, especially after a clear week.
Best for your group size
Small group · 10–25
Groups of 10–25 fit in a single Wailea or Kīhei vacation-rental compound; coordinate sunrise reservations together (one car per permit).
Medium group · 25–60
Groups of 25–60 should book a Wailea resort block (Andaz, Grand Wailea, Four Seasons) and accept that the trip is mostly resort-based with Haleakalā day-trips.
Large group · 60+
Groups of 60+ rarely do Maui — the cost and rental-car logistics scale poorly. Families this size more often pick a Big Island resort or stick to mainland parks.

Reunion organizer tips
Be honest about the cost. A Hawaii reunion runs 2-3x what a continental US reunion costs once flights, lodging, and rental cars are factored in. If anyone in the group cannot afford it, build that into the conversation early — do not surprise people with the price tag.
Do not try to do summit sunrise and Hāna in the same day. Each takes a full day. Plan one Haleakalā summit day (sleep at noon the day before) and one separate Hāna Highway / Kīpahulu day, with a beach day in between.
Book sunrise reservations the moment they open. NPS releases summit sunrise parking permits 60 days ahead at 7 AM HST and the popular dates sell out within minutes. Have multiple people in the reunion try at the exact moment.
Keep elevation in mind for older relatives. The summit is at 10,000 feet; people with heart, blood pressure, or breathing issues should consult a doctor and consider skipping the summit. The Kīpahulu district is at sea level and works for everyone.
Plan a Hāna Highway day with a flexible end. Most groups underestimate how slow the road is — plan to leave Hāna by 1 PM if you want to be back at the resort by sunset, or stay overnight in Hāna.

Frequently asked
Is Haleakalā worth the cost of a Hawaii reunion?
If your reunion is already committing to Maui for the beaches and resorts, then yes — Haleakalā gives you a once-in-a-lifetime sunrise and the Pīpīwai bamboo forest. If Haleakalā is the only reason to go to Hawaii, choose a less expensive park.
Do I need a reservation?
For summit sunrise (3 AM-7 AM), yes — book through recreation.gov 60 days ahead, $1 per car plus the park entry fee. For midday and afternoon, no reservation needed. Kīpahulu does not require a reservation.
How cold is the summit?
30s-40s F at sunrise, even in summer. Wind chill can drop it into the 20s. Bring a real winter jacket, hat, and gloves — not just a Hawaii-vacation hoodie.
Can older relatives do the sunrise?
Maybe. The drive is in the dark on a winding road with elevation gain to 10,000 feet. People with heart, blood pressure, or altitude issues should consult a doctor. The view is achievable from the parking lot — no hiking required once you arrive.
Can we combine the summit and Hāna Highway in one day?
No, realistically. Each is a full day. Sleep early before sunrise and rest after; do Hāna on a separate day with a 6 AM start.
Where should we stay?
South Maui (Wailea, Kīhei) is most central — 1.25 hr to summit and 2.5 hr to Kīpahulu. West Maui (Kāʻanapali) is farther but has more luxury inventory. Up-country Kula vacation rentals put you closest to the summit but far from beaches.
