Kakadu is Australia's largest national park — 19,800 km² of stone country, wetlands, and gorges, dual World Heritage listed for both natural and cultural values. The park is owned by the Bininj/Mungguy traditional owners and jointly managed with Parks Australia. Reunions here are rare but intense — typically a 4–6 day road trip from Darwin (3 hr drive to the park), heavy on Indigenous rock art (Ubirr, Nourlangie), Yellow Water cruises, and Jim Jim Falls. This is genuine remote travel: saltwater crocodiles in every waterway, tropical heat, two distinct seasons (the dry, May–October, and the wet, November–April with road closures). Brief overseas relatives carefully and book through Indigenous-owned tour operators where possible.

When to go

May–October (the dry) is the only realistic window for most reunions — 22–32 °C, low humidity, all roads open, all sites accessible. November–April (the wet) brings monsoonal rain, road closures (Jim Jim and Twin Falls inaccessible), and 35 °C+ humid days. The Bininj seasonal calendar has six seasons; locals will tell you the cool dry (Wurrkeng, June–August) is best for outsiders. Expect daytime mid-30s in October just before the build-up.

Best for your group size

Small group · 10–25

Groups of 8–16: book Cooinda Lodge (multiple rooms) plus 2–3 4WD hires. The most workable Kakadu reunion size.

Medium group · 25–60

Groups of 16–30: split between Cooinda Lodge and Mercure Kakadu Crocodile Hotel. Group on the same Yellow Water cruise.

Large group · 60+

Groups of 30+: difficult — Kakadu accommodation is limited. Consider chartering a Wildlife Tourism Australia or AAT Kings group tour for 4 days.

Reunion organizer tips

Acknowledge that you're on Country. Kakadu is the home of the Bininj/Mungguy traditional owners — read the cultural protocols at Bowali Visitor Centre on day one and respect all gender-restricted and sacred sites. This isn't bureaucratic, it's genuine.

Base at Cooinda Lodge — Indigenous-owned, central to Yellow Water and Nourlangie, and the easiest reunion logistics. Book 6–9 months ahead in dry season.

Hire 4WDs (or a 4WD minibus with driver) if you want Jim Jim, Twin Falls, or Gunlom — sealed-road hire cars don't make it. Many families book a 4-day Kakadu tour from Darwin via AAT Kings, Wayoutback, or Lord's Kakadu — easier than DIY.

Book the Yellow Water cruise on day one (sunrise slot). Operated by Kakadu Tourism (Indigenous-owned), it's the experience that defines the trip — saltwater crocs, jabirus, lily floodplains.

Brief overseas relatives carefully: heat, crocodiles, fuel range, no cell coverage. This is not a US national park experience — wilder, more remote, and the wildlife rules are non-negotiable.

Frequently asked

When should we go to Kakadu?

May–October (the dry season). Roads are open, all sites accessible, weather is 22–32 °C and dry. Wet season (Nov–April) closes most 4WD-only sites and brings extreme humidity.

Do we need 4WDs?

For Jim Jim, Twin Falls, and Gunlom — yes. For Ubirr, Nourlangie, Yellow Water, and the main lodges — sealed-road hire cars are fine. Many reunions book a guided 4WD tour to handle this.

Is Kakadu safe with kids?

Yes, with adult supervision and respect for the rules. NEVER swim outside designated croc-safe areas. Watch for heat exhaustion. Most rock art and visitor centres are kid-friendly. The Yellow Water cruise is excellent for ages 5+.

How do we engage respectfully with Bininj culture?

Read the cultural protocols at Bowali Visitor Centre. Book Indigenous-owned operators (Kakadu Tourism / Cooinda Lodge / Yellow Water Cruises). Respect signage on gender-restricted and sacred sites. Listen more than you talk.

How much does a Kakadu reunion cost per person?

~$280–$520 AUD/person/day. Park entry $40 AUD/adult (7 days). Cooinda Lodge ~$300 AUD/night. Yellow Water cruise ~$110/adult. 4WD hire from Darwin $200–$300 AUD/day.

Does Reunly work in low-coverage areas?

Yes — itinerary loads on first sync, then renders offline. /pricing.
