Kangaroo Island is Australia's third-largest island — 155 km long, 13 km off the South Australian coast at Cape Jervis. The 2019–20 Black Summer bushfires burnt over half the island; recovery is ongoing and tourism is very welcome. Reunions here favour multi-bedroom holiday houses near American River, Penneshaw, or Vivonne Bay, and the island's headline experiences are wildlife (Seal Bay sea lions, Flinders Chase NP koalas, Remarkable Rocks). Reach by 45-min SeaLink ferry from Cape Jervis (1 hr 45 min drive south of Adelaide) or 30-min REX flight from Adelaide to Kingscote (KGC).

Practical logistics

Closest Airports
Kingscote Airport (KGC) — 30-min REX/QantasLink from Adelaide. Or SeaLink ferry from Cape Jervis (1 hr 45 min drive south of Adelaide) to Penneshaw, 45 min crossing.
Group Lodging
Lodge stays: Southern Ocean Lodge (ultra-premium, 25 suites, reopened 2023 post-fires), Vivonne Bay Lodge, Lifetime Private Retreats. Stayz holiday houses are the dominant format — 4–8 bedroom houses cluster in American River, Emu Bay, Vivonne Bay, and Stokes Bay. Limited holiday parks and modest motels in Kingscote and Penneshaw.
Parking
Free everywhere; bring your hire car on the ferry or hire on-island.
Accessibility
Seal Bay has a fully accessible boardwalk option. Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch have wheelchair-accessible paths to viewing platforms. Most beaches require sand walking.
Cost Per Person
~$240–$520 AUD/person/day (~$160–$345 USD), including ferry, accommodation, vehicle, tours.
Cell Service
Telstra coverage in towns; patchy on west end and remote bays.
Drinking Age
18+ (vs US 21).
Fire Recovery
The 2019–20 bushfires damaged Flinders Chase NP and Western River; tourism revenue is critical to recovery. Many tracks have reopened; check Parks SA before booking specific walks.

When to go

September–November (spring) and March–May (autumn) are the comfort sweet spots — 16–22 °C, calm seas, wildflowers in spring, fewer crowds than summer. December–February is summer (20–27 °C, peak prices, school holidays in January). June–August is winter (8–14 °C) with stormy seas and the fewest visitors — ferry can cancel for swell. Seal pups born September; whales offshore June–October.

Best for your group size

Small group · 10–25

Groups of 8–16: a 5–6 bedroom Stayz house in American River or Emu Bay, plus a hire car for every 5 adults.

Medium group · 25–60

Groups of 16–30: two adjacent Stayz houses, or split between Stayz and Mercure Kangaroo Island Lodge.

Large group · 60+

Groups of 30+: Kangaroo Island accommodation strains at scale. Better to do 5–6 days on the island with a 12-person inner circle and have other relatives join the Adelaide portion only.

Reunion organizer tips

Book a 6–8 bedroom Stayz holiday house in American River or Emu Bay with a cook's kitchen — the island's best restaurants are scattered, so cooking some nights at the house works better than chasing reservations.

Bring your hire car on the SeaLink ferry from Cape Jervis. The ferry is $200 AUD return per car including driver, plus $120 per additional adult passenger. Driving the island yourself beats local hire (which is limited and expensive).

Don't try to do the whole island in 2 days — 4 days minimum, ideally 5. Distances are deceptive (Penneshaw to Flinders Chase is 2 hours).

Book the Seal Bay guided beach walk 4+ weeks ahead. Group size is capped; the boardwalk-only option is a back-up but the guided walk is the experience.

Acknowledge the fire recovery. The 2019–20 Black Summer fires hit Kangaroo Island hard. Choose locally-owned operators where possible; tip generously; prep relatives that some areas still look fire-scarred.

Reunly tracks the multi-stop South Australia reunion (Adelaide + KI) cleanly in one workspace. /pricing.

Frequently asked

Ferry or fly?

Ferry if you're bringing a car (you should). 1 hr 45 min drive + 45 min crossing. Fly REX/QantasLink to Kingscote (30 min from Adelaide) if you're willing to hire on-island, but on-island hire is limited.

When should we go?

September–November (spring with wildflowers and calm seas) or March–May (autumn). Avoid June–August stormy weather. Christmas–January is peak prices.

Yes — koala hold experiences are still legal in South Australia (and Queensland). Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park is the place. Not legal in NSW or Victoria.

How much does a KI reunion cost per person?

~$240–$520 AUD/person/day, including ferry, accommodation, vehicle, and tours. Stayz holiday houses with shared cooking knock 25–30% off.

Yes — currency-agnostic, SMS and email RSVPs to any country code. /pricing.
