Lake of the Woods is one of the largest lakes in the United States — 950,000 acres straddling the Minnesota–Manitoba–Ontario border, with 14,552 islands and more than 65,000 miles of shoreline. It's a serious fishing destination ("Walleye Capital of the World"), a quiet northern-cabin reunion base, and one of the few places in the lower 48 where you can still ice-fish on a frozen lake from an ATV-towed sleeper house in February. The Minnesota side is anchored by Baudette and Warroad — small towns with classic resort lodges and dozens of multi-cabin family camps that have been run by the same families for three generations.

Walleye fishing charter
Lake of the Woods is the official "Walleye Capital of the World." Half-day charters take 6–8 people; full-day overnights are common in summer.
Official source ↗Ice fishing in a sleeper house (winter)
Resorts tow heated sleeper houses out onto the frozen lake for 2-day stays — bunks, propane heat, and pre-drilled holes. Most unique reunion experience in MN.
Official source ↗Zippel Bay State Park
3,000-acre state park with a 3-mile sand beach (rare for a Minnesota lake), camping, and easy hiking trails.
Official source ↗Northwest Angle day trip
The northernmost point of the lower 48 — only accessible by boat from the MN mainland or by driving through Canada. Quirky reunion road-trip stop.
Official source ↗Stand-up paddleboard / kayak from a resort dock
Most family resort lodges have shoreline-rental kayaks and SUPs included with the cabin stay. Calm bays at dawn are first-timer territory.
Official source ↗Boat tour of the islands
Several Baudette and Warroad operators run half-day pontoon island tours. Easy "everyone together" afternoon.
Official source ↗Resort game-cleaning station + fish fry
Most family camps include game-cleaning service plus a Saturday-night reunion fish fry — the easiest big group dinner.
Official source ↗Day trip to Voyageurs National Park
About 2 hours east. Houseboat country, similar wilderness vibe, and a different state park experience for the no-fishing day.
Official source ↗Hayes Lake State Park
Smaller inland state park 30 min south — beach, fishing pier, and 13 miles of trails. Easier walking for grandparents and tiny kids.
Official source ↗Bonfire on the resort beach
Most family resorts include nightly bonfire pits on the beach with firewood provided. The single best low-effort reunion evening.

When to go
June through August for open-water fishing and family-resort weeks (water peaks at 65–70°F in late July). Late January through early March for ice fishing — a uniquely Minnesota experience and the lowest rates of the year.
Best for your group size
Small group · 10–25
Groups of 10–25 fit in 3–4 cabins at a single family resort. Sportsman's Lodges and Border View are the easiest small-reunion picks.
Medium group · 25–60
Groups of 25–60 typically book a full cabin row (6–10 cabins) at a single family resort. The lodge dining rooms can do private group dinners for 30+.
Large group · 60+
Groups of 60+ usually take over an entire smaller resort, or split between Sportsman's Lodges and Border View on the same Pine Island Bay area.

Reunion organizer tips
Pick a family resort, not a single cabin. The Lake of the Woods reunion sweet spot is a multi-cabin family-resort with a shared beach, dock, and main lodge — Sportsman's, Border View, Adrian's, and Cyrus all do this well.
Book 6–9 months out for peak summer. The 4–8 cabin clusters at the major lodges fill for July 4 and the second week of July a year ahead.
For ice-fishing reunions, book 4+ months out. Sleeper-house spots are limited and most ice-fishing operators run on 1–2 day rotations from January through early March.
Designate offline meeting times. Cell service on the lake is unreliable. Pick a daily 6 PM lodge check-in spot and stick to it.
Plan around the bug season. Mid-June through early July is mosquito and biting-fly peak. Late July and August are much friendlier; September is the local favorite for the active half.
Pre-arrange the fish fry. Most resorts handle game cleaning included; ask in advance about a Saturday-night reunion fish fry — it's the easiest "everyone together" big dinner up north.

Frequently asked
When is the best time to visit Lake of the Woods for a family reunion?
June through August is peak open-water season — June is mosquito-heaviest, late July through August is friendliest. Late January through early March is prime ice-fishing season and a uniquely Minnesota reunion experience. September has thin crowds and good fishing.
How far in advance should I book a Lake of the Woods family resort?
6–9 months for peak summer weeks. The 4–8 cabin clusters at Sportsman's, Border View, Adrian's, and Cyrus fill for July 4 and the second week of July a year ahead. Ice fishing should be booked 4+ months out.
What's the best airport to fly into for Lake of the Woods?
International Falls (INL) is closest to Baudette at about 2 hours by car. Bemidji (BJI) is 2 hours from Warroad. Winnipeg (YWG) is 2.5 hours and sometimes has the cheapest fares — passport required. Minneapolis (MSP) is 5 hours but the broadest connectivity.
Is Lake of the Woods only for fishing reunions?
Fishing is the main draw, but Zippel Bay State Park has a 3-mile sand beach, the resorts include kayaks and SUPs, and pontoon island tours work for non-fishers. That said, if no one in your group wants to fish, Itasca State Park or Lake Michigan shores would suit you better.
Can my reunion ice-fish in winter?
Yes — and it's one of the most uniquely Minnesota reunion experiences. Resorts tow heated sleeper houses (bunks + propane heat + pre-drilled holes) onto the frozen lake for 2-day stays. Most operators run January through early March; book 4+ months out.
Is Lake of the Woods accessible for grandparents?
It's a rustic family-resort experience — many cabins have stairs and most docks are floating wood. Confirm ground-floor primary suites and dock accessibility at booking. Boat trips (charter or pontoon) are usually fine for older relatives once on the boat.
