Letchworth is the "Grand Canyon of the East" — a 17-mile-long, 600-ft-deep gorge cut by the Genesee River through western New York shale and sandstone, with three major waterfalls (Upper, Middle, and Lower) all visible from a single 1.5-mile rim path. The park covers 14,427 acres along the gorge between Mount Morris and Portageville, with a single in-park lodge (Glen Iris Inn) and a 270-site campground. For reunions, Letchworth is unusually compact — most overlooks and trails sit within a 2-mile stretch of the south end, with parking right next to the rim. Multi-generational groups especially appreciate that the headline waterfalls are paved, flat stroller-and-grandparent-friendly walks, while the longer trails reward the active half.

Reunion organizer tips
Book the Glen Iris Inn 6–9 months ahead for peak summer or fall-color weeks. The 16-room inn is the only "in-park" hotel option and fills a year out for October weekends.
For larger groups, use the park cabin rentals. Letchworth has 82 cabins in two main clusters — the Lower Falls cabins and the Highbanks cabins — that work for reunions of 25–40.
Schedule the hot-air-balloon ride for the very first morning. Balloons launch at sunrise (5–6 AM) and weather-cancel often. Booking day 1 leaves day 2 as a weather-cancel reschedule option.
Drive the rim road. The Park Road runs the full 17-mile length of the gorge with overlooks every 0.5–1 mile. Easy way for grandparents to see the headline views without long walks.
Plan one lunch at a pavilion. The 19 reservable picnic pavilions hold up to 200 people and are the easiest "everyone together" group lunch — book through NY State Parks 6+ months out for July.
Pair Letchworth with Niagara Falls or the Finger Lakes. Most reunion groups stay 2 nights at Letchworth and add 1–2 days at one of the neighbors.

Frequently asked
When is the best time to visit Letchworth State Park for a family reunion?
Early to mid-October is the single best week — peak fall colors over the gorge are spectacular and rates haven't spiked. Late June through August is peak summer with all programs running. Spring (April–May) sees the highest waterfall flows but variable weather.
How far in advance should I book the Glen Iris Inn?
For peak fall-color weekends (first three weekends of October) and July 4 weekend, book 9–12 months out — the 16-room inn fills a year ahead. The 82 park cabins should be booked 6+ months out for peak weeks.
Is Letchworth accessible for grandparents and strollers?
Many of the headline overlooks (Middle Falls, Inspiration Point) are paved and wheelchair-accessible. The Lower Falls trail has 127 stone steps and is NOT accessible. The 17-mile Park Road lets grandparents see almost everything from the car.
How does Letchworth compare to Niagara Falls for a reunion?
Letchworth is quieter, cheaper, and more "single-base reunion" friendly — you can stay 3 nights and have plenty to do. Niagara Falls is the iconic 1–2 night stop. Many reunion groups do both: 2 nights at Letchworth + 1 night in Niagara.
What's the best airport to fly into for Letchworth?
Rochester (ROC) is closest at about 45 minutes by car. Buffalo (BUF) is 1 hour and has more flight options. Syracuse (SYR) is 2 hours. Most reunion groups drive from upstate NY, Buffalo, or Rochester rather than flying in.
Can my reunion do the hot air balloon ride?
Yes — Balloons Over Letchworth runs sunrise launches mid-May through October with capacity for 4–6 per balloon. For a reunion, book the first morning of the trip; balloons weather-cancel often, so booking day 1 leaves day 2 as a reschedule option.
