America's newest national park (re-designated in 2020) is built around a 1,000-foot-deep sandstone gorge and one of the oldest rivers in the world. The headline image is the New River Gorge Bridge — at 3,030 feet long and 876 feet above the river, it's the longest single-span steel arch bridge in the Western Hemisphere. For a family reunion, this is a sweet spot: dramatic scenery, almost no crowds compared to the Smokies or Shenandoah, and Fayetteville is a charming small town with cabins, breweries, and outfitters that handle whitewater rafting trips for groups. October's Bridge Day, when the bridge closes to cars and BASE jumpers leap off, is a memorable but logistically demanding weekend.

Groups of 10–25 fit in 3–4 cabins at ACE Adventure Resort or a single large Fayetteville rental house — book 6 months ahead for summer.
Medium group · 25–60
Groups of 25–60 should book the cabin/lodge block at ACE or Adventures on the Gorge with a group raft trip — they handle catered meals and event space.
Large group · 60+
Groups of 60+ typically take over a section of an outfitter resort plus a Beckley hotel block, with rafting and meals as the daily rendezvous points.

Reunion organizer tips
Pick an outfitter resort if rafting is on the agenda. ACE Adventure Resort and Adventures on the Gorge have on-site cabins, restaurants, pools, and run their own raft trips — book group rates 6–9 months out and the entire reunion can stay together.
Avoid Bridge Day weekend unless that's the whole point. The third Saturday in October draws 80,000+ people; lodging triples in price and books up a year ahead. Pick the weekend before or after for the same fall color and 90% fewer people.
Match raft trips to abilities. Lower New is Class III–IV (age 12+); Upper New is calmer Class I–III (age 6+). Most outfitters run both same-day, so split the group: kids and grandparents on Upper, teens and adults on Lower, family dinner that night.
Build in non-rafting options. Not every relative will raft — bridge walks, the Endless Wall hike, Fayetteville breweries, and Sandstone Falls fill the day for the rest of the group.
Plan for the gorge's cool microclimate. The river is 60–65°F even in August; rafters get cold. Pack a fleece even if the gateway-town forecast says 85°F.
Use Fayetteville as the dinner hub. Even if you're staying at a resort, the town's small downtown — Pies & Pints, the Secret Sandwich Society, the Fayetteville Brewing Co. — is the easiest place for a group dinner reservation.

Frequently asked
When is the best time for a New River Gorge reunion?
June through August for rafting (the river is consistently runnable and outfitters are fully staffed). Mid-October for fall color. Avoid Bridge Day (third Saturday in October) unless that's the whole reason — lodging triples and the bridge is closed to cars.
Is rafting safe for kids and grandparents?
The Upper New River is Class I–III and accepts ages 6 and up — calm enough for grandparents and grade-schoolers. The Lower New is Class III–IV and is age 12+. Most outfitters run both same-day, so a reunion can split: gentle Upper for one group, big-water Lower for the other.
Where should we stay?
There's no in-park lodging. The two large outfitter resorts — ACE Adventure Resort and Adventures on the Gorge — have on-site cabins, pools, restaurants, and run rafting trips, which makes them the simplest reunion choice. Otherwise: Fayetteville cabin rentals, or chain hotels in Beckley.
Is the park accessible for older relatives?
The Canyon Rim Visitor Center boardwalk to the bridge overlook is wheelchair-accessible, as is the Sandstone Falls boardwalk in the southern section. Most trails (Endless Wall, Long Point, Diamond Point) are not. Fayette Station Road is a great drive for low-mobility relatives.
How big a deal is Bridge Day?
Big — about 80,000 visitors descend on Fayetteville for one Saturday in late October. The bridge closes to cars and BASE jumpers leap off all day. It's a unique experience but logistics are tough: book lodging 12+ months out and expect prices to spike 2–3x.
What's the closest airport?
Charleston, WV (CRW) is closest at about 1 hour to Fayetteville. Pittsburgh (PIT) and Roanoke (ROA) are both ~2.5–3.5 hours and often have cheaper fares. Charlotte (CLT) at 4 hours works for groups already road-tripping.
