Petrified Forest is the only U.S. national park that protects a stretch of historic Route 66, and it is one of the easiest 'big' parks to actually see in a single day. A 28-mile north-south scenic road links the Painted Desert badlands at one end with the largest concentrations of petrified wood at the other. There are eight short interpretive trails along the way, all 0.3 to 2 miles long, almost all flat. For a reunion, that means even the least-mobile relatives can ride the loop and step out for short walks at four or five stops. The park has no in-park lodging — most groups base in Holbrook, AZ.

A 0.4-mile loop behind the Rainbow Forest Museum; "Old Faithful" log is nearly 10 feet thick at the base.
Official source ↗Rainbow Forest Museum
Dinosaur fossils (this was a Triassic floodplain) plus exhibits on petrification; a strong air-conditioned afternoon stop.
Official source ↗Junior Ranger program
Free booklet at either visitor center; kids 5+ complete activities to earn a wooden ranger badge plus a 'Junior Paleontologist' patch option.

When to go
April–May and September–October. Spring temperatures are typically in the 60s–70s°F. Summer highs reach the upper 90s with strong afternoon thunderstorms (July–August monsoon). Winter is quieter and often dusted with snow over the Painted Desert — strange and beautiful but cold and windy.
Best for your group size
Small group · 10–25
Groups of 10–25 fit in 4–6 rooms at a Holbrook chain hotel or the Wigwam Motel concrete teepees (1–2 nights, novelty factor).
Medium group · 25–60
Groups of 25–60 should book a Holbrook hotel block 6 months ahead (Best Western, Hampton Inn) or anchor 1 hour west at La Posada in Winslow for a nicer base.
Large group · 60+
Groups of 60+ are unusual at Petrified Forest because of limited regional lodging. Most large reunions visit as a day trip from a Sedona or Flagstaff base.

Reunion organizer tips
This is a one-day park. Petrified Forest is the rare reunion-friendly park you can fully see in 4–6 hours. Most groups make it a centerpiece day during a longer Arizona trip — not the entire reunion base.
Drive south-to-north or north-to-south, not both. Enter at Rainbow Forest (south) if you want to see logs first; enter at Painted Desert Visitor Center (north, off I-40) if you want badlands first. The loop is one direction, easy to navigate.
Base in Holbrook (or Winslow). The park has no lodging. Holbrook is closest (20 min) with chain hotels and the iconic Wigwam Motel concrete teepees that kids love. Winslow has La Posada Hotel for smaller groups that want something nicer.
Pack out the petrified wood story. The strict no-collecting rule (federal offense) is a great teachable moment with kids before you arrive — point out the bins at the exits where guilty visitors mail rocks back.
Plan for thunderstorms in July–August. Monsoon season brings dangerous lightning on exposed mesas. If skies darken, retreat to the Rainbow Forest Museum or Painted Desert Inn — both have shelter and exhibits.
Pair with the Grand Canyon. Three hours west on I-40, or two hours southwest to Sedona. Many reunion groups pair Petrified Forest as a one-day stop in a larger 7-day Arizona swing.

Frequently asked
Can we see Petrified Forest in one day for a reunion?
Yes — the 28-mile park road plus the eight short interpretive trails is genuinely a 4–6 hour visit. Most reunion groups make it a single day in a larger Arizona itinerary rather than the full reunion base.
Where should we stay near Petrified Forest?
Holbrook, AZ (20 min from the south entrance) is the closest with chain hotels and the iconic Wigwam Motel. Winslow, AZ (1 hr west) has La Posada Hotel for groups that want something nicer. There is no in-park lodging.
Is Petrified Forest accessible for older relatives?
Unusually accessible for a national park. Both visitor centers, the Painted Desert Inn, Crystal Forest Trail, Giant Logs Trail, and Puerco Pueblo are all paved. Older relatives can see almost everything from the car or on short paved walks.
Can my kids take home a piece of petrified wood?
No — collecting any petrified wood inside the park is a federal offense with steep fines. There are commercial rock shops just outside the park (Holbrook is full of them) that sell legally collected pieces from private land.
What is the best time of year for Petrified Forest?
April–May and September–October. Summer monsoon thunderstorms (July–August) bring dangerous lightning on exposed mesas. Winter is cold and windy but quietly beautiful with snow on the Painted Desert.
Can we combine Petrified Forest with Grand Canyon or Sedona?
Yes. Grand Canyon South Rim is about 3 hours west; Sedona is about 2.5 hours southwest. Many reunion groups pair Petrified Forest as a single day inside a 5–7 day Arizona swing.
