Zion is the most-visited park in Utah and one of the most concentrated reunion settings in the West — almost everything happens in Zion Canyon, a 15-mile slot of red sandstone walls served by a free shuttle bus. The gateway town of Springdale runs right up to the park entrance, with hotels, vacation rentals, restaurants, and shops literally walking distance from the visitor center. Reunions with mixed mobility levels do unusually well here because the shuttle drops everyone at every major spot — no driving required.

When to go

March through May and September through November. Summer (June-August) hits 100°F+ in the canyon. Winter (Dec-Feb) is mild but the shuttle does not run, so you can drive the canyon yourself — a quieter option for small reunions.

Best for your group size

Small group · 10–25

Groups of 10-25 fit comfortably in a 4-6 bedroom Springdale vacation rental or 4-5 hotel rooms; Zion Lodge cabins also work.

Medium group · 25–60

Groups of 25-60 should book a cluster of Springdale rentals or block-book one of the larger Springdale hotels (Cable Mountain Lodge, Cliffrose Springdale, Hampton Inn Zion).

Large group · 60+

Groups of 60+ are easily handled by Springdale — block-book a hotel + add 2-3 nearby vacation rentals for the spillover. Some Springdale rentals sleep 30+ on a single property.

Reunion organizer tips

Stay in Springdale, not in the park. Zion Lodge is iconic but small (122 rooms) and it locks you into one location with limited dining. Springdale has 100+ rentals + hotels with restaurants, grocery, and pharmacy — better for 20+ person groups.

Use the Springdale town shuttle plus the park shuttle. Park your cars once at your rental, take the free Springdale shuttle to the entrance, walk through the visitor center, and pick up the park shuttle. Zero parking battles for the whole reunion.

Skip Angels Landing as a group activity. It needs a lottery permit, has serious exposure, and is not for kids or anyone uncomfortable with heights. Use Observation Point (alternate route) or Canyon Overlook for similar views without the permit headache.

Plan around the heat. In June-August, do all hikes before 10 AM and again after 5 PM. Mid-day is for the museum, lunch in Springdale, and a swim at your rental's pool.

Consider The Narrows as the centerpiece. Renting gear in Springdale ($25-35/person) and walking up the river even just an hour is the kind of memory grandchildren talk about for decades. Works for ages 6+ with adults.

Pair Zion with Bryce Canyon if you have 5+ nights. They are 90 minutes apart and complementary — Zion looks up from the canyon floor; Bryce looks down into amphitheaters of hoodoos. Most reunion groups do 3 nights Zion + 2 nights Bryce.

Frequently asked

When is the best time for a Zion family reunion?

March through May and September through November. Summer hits 100°F+ in the canyon. Spring brings high water in The Narrows; fall has the most comfortable weather and golden cottonwoods.

How far in advance should we book lodging?

Springdale rentals are bookable 6-12 months ahead for peak season; Zion Lodge in the park requires 12+ months for summer. Off-peak (Nov-Feb except holidays) you can often book 2-3 months out.

How much does a Zion reunion cost per person?

Plan $150-350/person/day for Springdale lodging + meals + activities. Springdale offers more affordable options than the in-park lodge. Park entry is $35/vehicle for 7 days.

Is Zion accessible for older relatives?

Yes — the Zion Canyon shuttle stops at every major site, Pa'rus Trail and Riverside Walk are paved/accessible, and the visitor center, museum, and Zion Lodge are wheelchair-friendly. Mixed mobility groups do unusually well at Zion.

Do we need a shuttle reservation?

In recent peak seasons, yes — check the NPS site each spring for that year's policy. The shuttle is free; some years use a no-cost ticket via recreation.gov to manage crowds.

What is the closest airport?

Las Vegas (LAS) is 2.5 hours and has the most flight options. St. George, UT (SGU) is 1 hour but has limited service. Salt Lake City (SLC) is 4.5 hours but often cheaper.
