Assateague Island is a 37-mile barrier island stretching from Ocean City, Maryland, down into Virginia — protected as a National Seashore on the MD side and as the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge on the VA side. The island is famous for its wild ponies (the "Chincoteague ponies" of Misty fame) that roam the dunes and beaches freely, plus broad undeveloped Atlantic beaches with no boardwalks or hotels. For reunions, Assateague is the best pairing of "wild beach" with "easy basecamp": the wild island itself for day-trips, and the family-resort towns of Ocean City (MD) or Chincoteague (VA) for big-house rentals or hotel blocks.

Reunion organizer tips

Pick which side you're basing on — they're separated by 60+ road miles. The MD side is bigger NPS land + Ocean City's big rental and hotel inventory; the VA side is the Chincoteague Island base with the famous Pony Swim and quieter feel.

For Pony Swim week (last Wednesday of July), book lodging 12+ months out. The week sells out a full year ahead in Chincoteague, and prices roughly double.

Plan around mosquitoes. Assateague's marshes are notorious — bring DEET and long sleeves for sunset visits. The beach itself is breezy and OK; the bayside trails are buggy.

Time pony viewing for dawn and dusk. Mid-day in summer, ponies are usually out of sight in the dunes. 6:30–8 AM and 6:30–8 PM are the windows. Stay 40 ft away — they kick.

Plan one Ocean City Boardwalk evening for kids. The 3-mile boardwalk has rides, fries, and old-school arcades — the easy non-beach reunion evening.

For a Chincoteague base, build in a half-day visit to Chincoteague NWR's 9-mile Wildlife Loop (cars allowed after 3 PM in summer; bikes allowed all day).

Frequently asked

When is the best time to visit Assateague for a family reunion?

Late June through early September is peak — Atlantic water reaches mid-70s, all programs running. September is the local sweet spot — water still warm, crowds thin after Labor Day, mosquitoes drop. Late July is Pony Swim week — book a year out if you want to attend.

Should we base on the Maryland or Virginia side?

The MD side has bigger NPS beaches and Ocean City's deep rental and hotel inventory — best for big reunions and easy logistics. The VA side (Chincoteague Island) is quieter, has the famous Pony Swim, and feels more like a small fishing town. Pick based on the group's vibe.

How do we see the wild ponies?

Drive the entrance road on either side at dawn or dusk. The ponies wander freely — sometimes on the road, sometimes in the dunes. Stay 40 ft away (NPS rule, and they kick). Mid-day in summer they're usually hidden in the dunes.

Is Assateague accessible for grandparents and small kids?

NPS visitor centers and beach boardwalks are accessible. Beach wheelchairs are available free at the MD-side ranger station — reserve in advance. The Atlantic surf can be strong; the bayside areas are calmer for tiny kids.

How far in advance should I book lodging for an Assateague reunion?

9–12 months for peak summer weeks. For Pony Swim week (last Wednesday of July), book 12+ months out — the week sells out a full year ahead in Chincoteague, and prices roughly double. September can usually be booked 3–4 months out.

What's the best airport to fly into for Assateague?

Salisbury (SBY) is closest at about 45 minutes by car but has very limited flights. Norfolk (ORF) is 2 hours from Chincoteague. Baltimore (BWI) is 3 hours, and Washington Dulles (IAD) is 3.5 hours — both have far more flight options.
