Cape Cod National Seashore protects 43,500 acres along the Outer Cape — 40 miles of Atlantic-facing beach, dramatic 100-ft sand dunes, salt marshes, kettle ponds, and the historic lighthouses of Highland and Race Point. Established by JFK in 1961, the Seashore is federal NPS land within the broader Cape Cod peninsula (which has its own town-rental and bay-side reunion economy — see our Cape Cod page). For reunions, the Seashore is the move when you want big-water Atlantic surf, ranger-led programs, and a Junior Ranger book in every kid's hand. The two visitor centers (Salt Pond in Eastham and Province Lands in Provincetown) anchor the experience.

When to go
Late June through August is peak — Atlantic water reaches the high 60s, all visitor centers and beach shuttles run. September is the local sweet spot — water still 68°F, crowds thin after Labor Day, rentals 25–35% cheaper. Hurricane risk peaks late August through October.
Best for your group size
Small group · 10–25
Groups of 10–25 fit in one 6–8 BR Outer Cape rental near the Seashore (Wellfleet, Truro, or Eastham).
Medium group · 25–60
Groups of 25–60 typically book two adjacent rentals on the same Outer Cape access road, or use the Wequassett Resort in Chatham as a hotel-style base for Seashore day-trips.
Large group · 60+
Groups of 60+ usually split across 4–6 rentals in Wellfleet/Truro or use the Sea Crest in Falmouth (further from the Seashore but with conference space). Large single-rental Outer Cape reunions are rare.

Reunion organizer tips
Treat the Seashore as the day-trip half of an Outer Cape reunion. Most reunions rent a 6–10 BR house in Wellfleet or Truro, then visit Salt Pond, Coast Guard, Race Point, and Province Lands across the week. The Seashore itself has no lodges.
Use the Salt Pond shuttle for Coast Guard Beach. The Coast Guard parking lot fills before 11 AM. Park at Salt Pond, ride the shuttle in, beach all day, ride back. Avoids the parking scramble entirely.
Get a Junior Ranger book on day 1. Pick up at Salt Pond or Province Lands; kids complete activities across the week and earn a wooden badge at the end.
Plan one ranger talk. The summer ranger program runs nightly bonfire talks at Salt Pond and dune walks from Province Lands — the easiest "everyone together" cultural night.
Book whale watches 4–6 weeks ahead. The Provincetown whale-watch fleet fills on summer weekends. Half-day morning trips return in time for an afternoon beach session.
Drive out to Race Point for sunset. Herring Cove and Race Point are the rare east-coast Atlantic beaches facing west — the family photo at golden hour is a Cape classic.

Frequently asked
When is the best time to visit Cape Cod National Seashore for a family reunion?
September is the local sweet spot — Atlantic water still 68°F, crowds thin after Labor Day, rentals 25–35% cheaper. Late June through August is peak summer with all programs running. Hurricane risk peaks late August through October.
Where do we stay for a Cape Cod National Seashore reunion?
There are no NPS-operated lodges inside the Seashore. Most reunions rent a 6–10 BR vacation house in Wellfleet, Truro, or Eastham — all on or near Seashore land. Inns and small hotels in Provincetown handle smaller reunions. Book peak summer 9–12 months out.
How is the National Seashore different from the rest of Cape Cod?
The Seashore is the federal NPS land protecting the Outer Cape — Atlantic dunes, lighthouses, and 40 miles of beach. The broader Cape (Hyannis, Chatham, Brewster, etc.) is town-rental territory with shopping and bay-side beaches. Most reunion groups stay near the Seashore but day-trip across both.
Is Cape Cod National Seashore accessible for grandparents and strollers?
Most NPS beaches have accessible parking and boardwalk dune crossings. Beach wheelchairs are available free at Salt Pond, Race Point, and Marconi — reserve in advance. The Province Lands dune overlook deck is fully accessible.
How do I avoid the Coast Guard Beach parking nightmare?
Park at the Salt Pond Visitor Center and ride the shuttle in (runs every 15 minutes in summer). The Coast Guard lot fills before 11 AM and is closed to direct cars in peak season. The shuttle removes the parking scramble entirely.
What's the best airport to fly into for Cape Cod National Seashore?
Boston Logan (BOS) is 2.5 hours away by car and has the most flight options. Providence (PVD) is 2 hours and often cheaper. Provincetown Municipal (PVC) has very limited flights — usually only worth it for east-coast hops via Cape Air.
