Channel Islands protects five islands off the Southern California coast — Santa Cruz, Anacapa, Santa Rosa, San Miguel, and Santa Barbara — plus a one-nautical-mile band of surrounding ocean. Established as a national park in 1980, the islands are often called 'North America's Galapagos' for their endemic species, including the island fox. It's the least-visited California national park and the most logistically unusual: there is no driving in. Reunions here center on a day-trip ferry from Ventura with the mainland gateway towns (Ventura, Oxnard, Santa Barbara) doing the work as your reunion home base.

Practical logistics

Closest Airports
Burbank (BUR) ~1.5 hr · LAX ~1.5 hr · Santa Barbara (SBA) ~30 min to Ventura Harbor.
Group Lodging
No in-park hotels (only primitive camping). Reunion home base is mainland Ventura, Oxnard, or Santa Barbara — vacation rentals, beach hotels, and Marriott/Hilton-class properties at scale.
Cell Service
Excellent on the mainland; almost none on the islands.
Parking
Ventura Harbor has paid lots near the visitor center and ferry; arrive 1 hour before the boat.
Park Fee
Free park entry. Ferry tickets (Island Packers) run roughly $45–85 per person depending on island.
Ferry
Island Packers (islandpackers.com) is the official concessioner; book 1–2 months ahead in summer. Most boats leave at 8 AM and return mid-afternoon.
Accessibility
The Ventura Visitor Center is fully accessible. Anacapa requires climbing 157 stairs from the landing; Santa Cruz has a beach landing with rolling stairs/ramp depending on tides — call Island Packers ahead.
Seasickness
The Santa Barbara Channel can be choppy. Take Dramamine 30 min before boarding; pick a window-seat aisle on the upper deck.

When to go

May through October has the most reliable weather and ferry schedule. June can be foggy ("June Gloom"). September and October are the warmest, calmest, and clearest. Whale season runs December through April (gray whales) and May through September (blues and humpbacks). Winter ferries are weather-dependent.

Best for your group size

Small group · 10–25

10–25 fits in 2 vacation rentals or a hotel block in Ventura Harbor; one Island Packers boat handles the day trip.

Medium group · 25–60

25–60 should book a 4–6 room hotel block (Crowne Plaza Ventura Beach, Four Points Ventura Harbor) and reserve a half-boat block on Island Packers.

Large group · 60+

60+ groups need an event hotel in Ventura, Oxnard, or Santa Barbara plus a full charter through Island Packers; the standard ferry can't absorb a group this size as walk-ons.

Reunion organizer tips

Treat the islands as a one-day excursion, not a whole trip. Base the reunion in Ventura, Oxnard, or Santa Barbara — that's where the lodging, restaurants, and "didn't-do-the-boat" backup plans live. The boat day to Santa Cruz or Anacapa is the headliner inside a 3- to 5-day mainland reunion.

Book Island Packers ferry 4–8 weeks ahead in summer. Saturday boats fill fastest; midweek has more flexibility. Book everyone's tickets together so the group sits as one block on the boat.

Pick Santa Cruz, not Anacapa, for kids and mixed-mobility groups. Santa Cruz (Scorpion Anchorage) has a beach landing, easy short hikes, and snorkeling cove. Anacapa requires climbing a 157-stair iron stairway from the ferry landing — not realistic for many older relatives.

Plan around seasickness. The Santa Barbara Channel can be 2–4 ft swells. Send a group text the night before with the Dramamine recommendation, breakfast advice (something light, not nothing), and the meeting time at Ventura Harbor.

Half the group probably won't do the boat — that's fine. Older relatives, pregnant cousins, and seasickness-prone kids can spend the day at the harbor village, the Ventura pier, or San Buenaventura State Beach. Re-converge for dinner.

Time it around whales if you can. Mid-December through mid-April for gray whales (often visible from the boat). May through September for blue and humpback whales — Channel Islands is one of the best blue-whale viewing spots on Earth. Most ferry trips include sightings as a bonus.

Frequently asked

How do you get to Channel Islands National Park?

Boat or seaplane only — there is no driving in. The official concessioner is Island Packers (islandpackers.com), which runs daily ferries from Ventura Harbor and Oxnard to Santa Cruz, Anacapa, and (less frequently) the outer islands. The Santa Cruz crossing takes about 1 hour each way; book 4–8 weeks ahead in summer.

Where should our reunion stay?

Mainland Ventura is the most logical base — hotels and vacation rentals on the harbor walk to the ferry, and the visitor center is 200 yards away. Oxnard (Channel Islands Harbor) and Santa Barbara are alternatives 15–30 minutes away. There is no in-park lodging beyond primitive camping.

Is Channel Islands accessible for older relatives?

The Ventura mainland visitor center is fully accessible. The boat itself has open seating but no elevator between decks. Anacapa requires climbing 157 stairs from the landing — not realistic for many older relatives. Santa Cruz has a beach landing with rolling stairs or a ramp; call Island Packers ahead to discuss specific needs.

Should we go to Santa Cruz or Anacapa Island?

Santa Cruz for kids, mixed-mobility groups, and a longer day on the island — Scorpion Anchorage has easy hikes, snorkel cove, kayak rentals, and a beach landing. Anacapa for a shorter, easier day-out with iconic lighthouse and Arch Rock views — but only if your group can handle the 157-stair landing climb.

Do we need reservations to enter the park?

Park entry is free, but you need an Island Packers ferry ticket to actually reach an island (roughly $45–85 per person). Camping requires a Recreation.gov reservation. Day-trip visitors do not need a separate park reservation beyond the boat ticket.

What about whale watching?

Channel Islands is one of the world's best blue whale viewing destinations (May–September) and a reliable gray whale corridor (mid-December through mid-April). Many Island Packers boats encounter whales en route to the islands, and they also run dedicated mainland whale-watching trips for relatives who skip the island day.
