Joshua Tree was elevated from national monument to national park status in 1994 and protects 795,156 acres where the high Mojave Desert meets the lower Colorado Desert. The yucca-like Joshua trees grow only at the Mojave elevations on the park's west side; the east is creosote-and-cholla-flat country. For reunions it has two huge advantages: it's a 2.5-hour drive from LAX and Palm Springs (PSP), and the towns just outside (Joshua Tree, Yucca Valley, Twentynine Palms) are full of vacation rentals built for groups. The single hard rule: never plan a summer reunion here. Daytime highs hit 105°F+ from June through September and are genuinely dangerous for older relatives.

1.1-mile loop to a small reservoir built by early ranchers; pictograph panel along the way.

Good for
- Reunions within driving distance of LA / Palm Springs
- Photo-driven trips (Cholla Garden, Keys View at sunset)
- Stargazing nights with kids
- Vacation-rental compound reunions in Joshua Tree town
- Cool-season trips (October–April only)
Practical logistics
- Closest Airports
- Palm Springs (PSP) ~45 min to West Entrance · Ontario (ONT) ~1.5 hr · Los Angeles (LAX) ~2.5 hr.
- Group Lodging
- No in-park lodging beyond campgrounds. Vacation-rental compounds in Joshua Tree, Yucca Valley, and Twentynine Palms are the standard reunion choice — many sleep 12–20.
- Cell Service
- None inside the park; reliable in the gateway towns. Pre-print directions and rendezvous points.
- Parking
- West and North entrances back up 30–60 minutes mid-morning on holiday weekends; enter before 9 AM or after 3 PM.
- Park Fee
- $30 per vehicle (7-day) or America the Beautiful annual pass.
- Accessibility
- Keys View, Cholla Cactus Garden boardwalk, Oasis of Mara, and parts of the visitor centers are wheelchair-friendly. Most short hikes are on packed sand and uneven rock.
- Weather
- Summer (June–September) regularly hits 100–110°F and is unsafe for many older relatives. Winter nights drop below freezing. Spring and fall are the only sensible reunion seasons.

When to go
October through April. March/April for wildflowers (in a wet year). November and December for crisp days and almost-empty trails. Avoid June–September entirely for any reunion that includes older relatives or young kids — daytime highs are dangerous.
Best for your group size
Small group · 10–25
10–25 fits in 1–2 large vacation rentals in Joshua Tree town or Yucca Valley.
Medium group · 25–60
25–60 should book a 3–4 house cluster in Joshua Tree or Twentynine Palms, ideally on the same street so kids can move between yards.
Large group · 60+
60+ groups need an event-style estate (several available in Yucca Valley and Pioneertown) or a multi-house compound; the park itself can't absorb a group this size in a single spot.

Reunion organizer tips
Never plan a Joshua Tree reunion in summer. June through September daytime highs hit 100–110°F. There is essentially no shade in the park, and older relatives and young kids are at real heat-risk. October–April only.
Rent a house outside the park — plural, if needed. There is no in-park lodging beyond campgrounds. The towns of Joshua Tree, Yucca Valley, and Twentynine Palms have hundreds of vacation-rental homes built for groups; many sleep 12–20 with pools and fire pits. Book 6+ months out for spring or holiday weeks.
Stage the day around heat. Even in shoulder season, plan hikes (Hidden Valley, Barker Dam, Ryan Mountain) for 7–10 AM. Use 11 AM–3 PM for the rental's pool, the Joshua Tree Saloon, or the Integratron sound bath. Resume park drives (Keys View, Cholla, Skull Rock) at 4 PM through sunset.
Carry a gallon of water per person per day. Not a suggestion. There is no water inside the park beyond the visitor centers. Refill at the rental every morning.
Plan one official stargazing night. Joshua Tree is an International Dark Sky Park. Drive out to Cap Rock or Hidden Valley after dinner on a new-moon night, lay down blankets, no flashlights — the Milky Way is what people will talk about a year later.
Use the West Entrance for kids, the North Entrance to skip lines. The West Entrance (Park Blvd at Joshua Tree town) has the shortest drive to Hidden Valley and Skull Rock. The North Entrance at Twentynine Palms is usually 30+ minutes faster on a busy weekend morning.

Frequently asked
When is the best time for a Joshua Tree family reunion?
October through April. Spring (March/April) and late fall (October/November) are the sweet spots — daytime highs in the 60s–80s, cold nights for fires, and the park busy but not overwhelmed. Avoid June through September entirely; daytime highs of 100–110°F are genuinely dangerous for older relatives.
Where do reunion groups stay near Joshua Tree?
Vacation rentals in Joshua Tree, Yucca Valley, and Twentynine Palms. There is no in-park lodging beyond campgrounds. Many rentals sleep 12–20 with pools, hot tubs, and fire pits. For groups of 40+, book a 3–4 house cluster on the same street or look at event estates in Pioneertown.
How far is Joshua Tree from LAX or Palm Springs?
Palm Springs (PSP) is the closest airport at about 45 minutes to the West Entrance. Ontario (ONT) is about 1.5 hours. LAX is roughly 2.5 hours without traffic. For a reunion flying in from out of state, Palm Springs is usually the easiest and is a beautiful one-night layover on either end.
Is Joshua Tree accessible for older relatives?
Yes for the headline experiences. Keys View is a drive-up overlook with a short paved walk. The Cholla Cactus Garden is a flat boardwalk loop. The Oasis of Mara at the Twentynine Palms visitor center is a paved 0.5-mile loop. Most short trails like Hidden Valley are packed sand and uneven rock — manageable for many but not for wheelchairs.
Do we need reservations to enter Joshua Tree?
No timed-entry reservation system as of 2026, unlike Yosemite. Just the standard $30/vehicle entry fee (or America the Beautiful pass). On holiday weekends the West and North entrance lines back up 30–60 minutes mid-morning — enter before 9 AM or after 3 PM.
Is there cell service in Joshua Tree?
Almost none inside the park boundary. Reliable Verizon and AT&T in Joshua Tree town, Yucca Valley, and Twentynine Palms. Pre-print the day's plan, set a daily 6 PM rendezvous time at the rental, and don't rely on group texts inside the park.
