Glacier sits on the Canadian border and packs over a million acres of glacier-carved peaks, more than 700 lakes, and the famous Going-to-the-Sun Road into a single park. For reunions it offers something the southern Rockies can't: a genuinely cool summer (60s-70s in July), turquoise alpine lakes you can swim in, and historic Great Northern Railway lodges that handle multi-generational groups well. The trade-off is logistics — the park is long, the road is the only east-west route, and lodging on either side fills 13 months ahead.

When to go

Mid-July through mid-September. Going-to-the-Sun Road usually opens late June to early July depending on snow clearing; full-park lodge season runs Memorial Day through late September. Avoid early June if you want the high road open.

Best for your group size

Small group · 10–25

Groups of 10-25 fit in 4-5 cabins at Lake McDonald Lodge or Many Glacier; vacation rentals in Whitefish or Kalispell are easier-booked alternatives.

Medium group · 25–60

Groups of 25-60 should anchor at Many Glacier Hotel (215 rooms) or Glacier Park Lodge in East Glacier (Amtrak-served, big block-booking available).

Large group · 60+

Groups of 60+ are not realistic inside the park lodges — book a group of vacation rentals in Whitefish, MT (45 min west) and use the park for daily activities.

Reunion organizer tips

Book exactly 13 months out at 8 AM Mountain when Xanterra opens reservations. Many Glacier Hotel and Lake McDonald Lodge sell out within minutes of the opening tick. Have multiple family members ready on phones and laptops at the same time.

Pick ONE side of the park as your home base — west (Lake McDonald, Apgar) or east (Many Glacier, St. Mary). Crossing Going-to-the-Sun Road takes 2+ hours each way and is exhausting if you do it daily.

Reserve the Going-to-the-Sun Road vehicle reservations the moment they open (usually late January for the upcoming summer). Without them, you cannot drive the famous road during peak hours June-September.

Book Red Bus Tours for the older relatives. The 1930s touring buses with the roll-back canvas roof are wildly popular and a perfect activity for grandparents who can't hike a half-day. Reserve 6+ months out.

Pack for cold mornings. Even in July, dawn at Logan Pass can be in the 30s. Add fleece + a real waterproof jacket to the reunion packing list — Glacier weather changes fast.

Have a rainy-day backup plan. Glacier sees more rain than the Tetons or Yellowstone — pre-scout an indoor option per side: Belton Train Depot Museum (west) or Lubec Lake Native America Speaks programs (east).

Frequently asked

When is the best time for a Glacier family reunion?

Mid-July through mid-September. Going-to-the-Sun Road usually opens late June or early July (snow clearing dependent), so July is the safest month for the full-park experience. September brings fewer crowds and golden larches at the end of the month.

How far in advance should we book?

Exactly 13 months out at 8 AM Mountain when Xanterra opens reservations. Many Glacier Hotel and Lake McDonald Lodge sell out within minutes. Outside that window, look at Whitefish or Kalispell vacation rentals 45 minutes from the west entrance.

Do we need a vehicle reservation?

For Going-to-the-Sun Road and the North Fork during peak summer hours, yes. Reservations open in late January for the upcoming summer at recreation.gov; book the moment they open.

Is Glacier accessible for older relatives?

Trail of the Cedars and several lakeshore boardwalks are wheelchair-accessible. The Red Bus Tours are perfect for grandparents who want the views without the hiking. Many of the best overlooks are drive-up.

Which side of the park should we stay on?

Pick ONE — west (Lake McDonald, Apgar) is rainforest-y, has more rentals, and is closer to the airport. East (Many Glacier, St. Mary) is drier, more dramatic, and has the iconic Many Glacier Hotel. Do not try to cross daily.

What is the closest airport?

Glacier Park International (FCA) at Kalispell is 30 minutes from the west entrance. Great Falls (GTF) is 3 hours from East Glacier. Spokane (GEG) is sometimes cheaper but adds a 4-hour drive.
