Glen Canyon NRA is 1.25 million acres of red-rock canyon country built around Lake Powell, the second-largest reservoir in the US, formed by Glen Canyon Dam in 1963. Lake Powell stretches 186 miles with 1,960 miles of shoreline — more shoreline than the entire US Pacific coast — winding through slot canyons, sandstone amphitheaters, and emerald-green coves. For reunions, Glen Canyon is the most photographed houseboat destination in the country: rent a multi-room houseboat from Wahweap or Bullfrog Marina, anchor in a slot canyon, and spend 3–5 days swimming and exploring side canyons. The town of Page, AZ, anchors the south end with hotels, the Antelope Canyon tours, and Horseshoe Bend.

When to go

Mid-April through May and October are the local sweet spot — water is 65–72°F, air is 70–85°F, no extreme heat. Peak summer (June–early September) is hot (95–105°F+) but water is most refreshing and slot canyons are coolest. November–March is cool and quiet.

Best for your group size

Small group · 10–25

Groups of 8–14 fit on a single 56–66 ft houseboat. Smaller groups can rent a 50 ft boat or use a Page hotel base with day rentals.

Medium group · 25–60

Groups of 25–40 rent two houseboats and tie them together. Wahweap and Bullfrog marinas coordinate side-by-side anchoring.

Large group · 60+

Groups of 60+ generally base in Page hotels (Lake Powell Resort, Hyatt Place, Courtyard) with day boat rentals from Wahweap and visits to Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend.

Reunion organizer tips

Book houseboats 9–12 months ahead for peak summer. The 50–75 ft multi-bedroom houseboats at Wahweap and Bullfrog fill a year out for the third week of July, Memorial Day, and Labor Day weekends.

Pair Page, AZ, hotels with houseboat days. Most reunion groups arrive in Page for night 1, board the houseboat day 2, return to Page for the bookend night before flying out — easier than living entirely on the boat.

Buy Antelope Canyon tickets ahead. Navajo Nation–run tours sell out 4–8 weeks in advance for summer weekends. Upper Antelope is the family-friendly version (no ladders, easier walk).

Hike Horseshoe Bend at dawn or dusk. Mid-day in summer is brutally hot (105°F+) and the parking lot fills before 9 AM. Sunrise is the best photo light.

Check Lake Powell water levels before booking. The lake has been at historically low levels — verify which boat ramps and side canyons are accessible at your dates with the marina.

Order groceries in Page, then load at the marina. The Walmart and Safeway in Page are the only large grocers for 100+ miles. Most marinas have grocery drop-off services for an additional fee.

Frequently asked

When is the best time to visit Glen Canyon / Lake Powell for a family reunion?

Mid-April through May and October are the local sweet spot — water is 65–72°F, air is 70–85°F, no extreme heat. Peak summer (June–early September) is hot (95–105°F+) but the water is most refreshing. November–March is cool and quiet but houseboats are limited.

How far in advance should I book a Lake Powell houseboat?

9–12 months for peak summer weeks. The 50–75 ft multi-bedroom houseboats at Wahweap and Bullfrog marinas fill a year out for the third week of July, Memorial Day, and Labor Day. Spring and fall can usually be booked 4–6 months out.

What's the difference between Lake Mead and Lake Powell for a reunion?

Lake Powell has more dramatic red-rock canyons, slot canyons, and the iconic Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend nearby — better for photography reunions. Lake Mead is closer to a major airport (Vegas), cheaper, less crowded, and has the Hoover Dam day-trip. Lake Powell is the bucket-list version; Lake Mead is the easier version.

Are houseboats accessible for grandparents?

Houseboats are NOT very accessible — narrow ladders to roof decks, tight bathrooms, step-up cabin doors. For relatives with mobility needs, a Page hotel base + day boat rentals from Wahweap is a much better fit. The Carl Hayden Visitor Center and Horseshoe Bend's upper viewing platform are accessible.

Do I need to book Antelope Canyon tours in advance?

Yes — Navajo Nation–run tours sell out 4–8 weeks in advance for summer weekends. Upper Antelope is the family-friendly version (no ladders, easier walk, sunbeams in summer mid-day). Lower Antelope has ladders and is more adventurous.

What's the best airport to fly into for Glen Canyon?

Page Municipal (PGA) is closest at 10 minutes from town but has very limited service. Las Vegas (LAS), Phoenix (PHX), and Salt Lake City (SLC) are all 4.5–5 hours by car and have far more flights. Flagstaff (FLG) is 2 hours away.
