Great Basin is the least-visited national park in the lower 48 west of the Mississippi — and that's precisely why it works for a reunion that wants quiet. The park stacks an improbable amount into 77,000 acres: 13,063-ft Wheeler Peak, the only year-round glacier in Nevada, a grove of 5,000-year-old bristlecone pines, and Lehman Caves — a small but elaborately decorated marble cave system reached only by ranger-led tour. The gateway town of Baker, NV (pop. ~70) has a small inn and two restaurants. Most reunion groups stay in Baker for the in-park feel, or in Ely, NV (1 hr west) for full-service hotels. This is a high-elevation park — even Lehman Caves sits at 6,825 ft.

  • Late-September aspen-color trips on the Wheeler Peak drive

Salt Lake City (SLC) ~3.5 hr · Las Vegas (LAS) ~4.5 hr · Cedar City (CDC) ~3 hr
Group Lodging
Baker, NV (5 min from the visitor center) has the small Stargazer Inn, the Border Inn (state-line motel), and a few short-term rentals — total available rooms are limited. Ely, NV (1 hr west) has full-service chain hotels (Holiday Inn Express, Hampton Inn) and is the practical reunion base.

Limited in Baker; spotty inside the park. Reliable in Ely.
Parking

When to go

Late June through September. The Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive is closed by snow late October to late May. July–August is peak (ranger programs, all roads open) but afternoon thunderstorms are common above 10,000 ft. Late September brings aspen color on the Wheeler Peak drive and is the single best week in the park.

Best for your group size

Small group · 10–25

Groups of 10–25 fit in the Stargazer Inn and a couple of Baker rentals; coordinate Lehman Caves tours as a single group reservation.

Medium group · 25–60

Groups of 25–60 should base in Ely (Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Prospector Hotel) and convoy the 1 hour to the park each day. Reserve cave tours in two consecutive time slots.

Large group · 60+

Groups of 60+ are unusual at Great Basin given the gateway town size. Most reunion groups that size split between Ely hotels and visit Lehman Caves in three or four staggered tours.

Reunion organizer tips

Book Lehman Caves tours the moment they release. Cave tours are the centerpiece of any Great Basin reunion. Tickets release on Recreation.gov 30 days ahead and the morning slots fill within hours in summer. Designate one organizer to book the whole group for the same tour time.

Base in Ely if you have a reunion-sized group. Baker, NV is charming and 5 minutes from the visitor center, but available rooms are limited. Ely (1 hour west) has full-service chain hotels (Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express) and reliable restaurants. The 1-hour drive is straight US-50 — easy.

Plan for elevation. Lehman Caves sits at 6,825 ft and the Bristlecone trailhead at 9,800 ft. Older relatives and anyone coming from sea level will feel the altitude. Arrive a day early at altitude if possible, push hydration, and skip the Wheeler Peak summit hike for anyone uncertain.

Use the Alpine Lakes Loop as the reunion hike. The 2.7-mile Alpine Lakes Loop is the single best multi-generational walk in the park — past Stella and Teresa Lakes at 10,000+ ft, mostly flat, jaw-dropping. Save the Wheeler Peak summit for the fittest sub-group.

Add a stargazing night. Great Basin is an International Dark Sky Park and runs free amphitheater + telescope programs at the Lehman Caves visitor center summer evenings. Even one program turns into the reunion story everyone tells.

Pair with US-50 "Loneliest Road in America". The drive between Ely and Salt Lake City or Cedar City is the classic Great Basin road-trip and fits well into a longer reunion swing.

Frequently asked

Do we need reservations for Lehman Caves?

Yes — Lehman Caves can only be visited on a ranger-led tour. Tickets release 30 days ahead on Recreation.gov and the summer morning slots sell out within hours. Designate one organizer to book the whole reunion the day tickets open.

Where should we stay for a Great Basin reunion?

Baker, NV (5 min from the visitor center) is the in-park-feel option but has very limited rooms — Stargazer Inn, Border Inn, a handful of rentals. Ely, NV (1 hour west) has full-service chain hotels (Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express) and is the practical base for reunion-sized groups. The drive between them on US-50 is easy.

How hard is the altitude?

Lehman Caves sits at 6,825 ft; the Bristlecone trailhead at 9,800 ft. Older relatives and anyone coming from sea level will feel it. Arrive a day early at altitude if possible, push hydration, and choose the Alpine Lakes Loop over the Wheeler Peak summit for less-acclimated guests.

When is the best time to visit Great Basin?

Late June through September. The Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive is closed by snow late October to late May. Late September is the peak week — aspens are gold, roads are open, crowds are gone, and afternoon thunderstorms taper off.

What is the best airport to fly into?

Salt Lake City (SLC) is the cleanest option at 3.5 hours. Las Vegas (LAS) is 4.5 hours but often the cheapest fares. Cedar City (CDC) is 3 hours but has very limited flight options.

Is Great Basin good for stargazing?

Yes — Great Basin is a certified International Dark Sky Park and runs free amphitheater + telescope programs at the Lehman Caves visitor center on summer evenings (June–September). For many reunion groups, one stargazing night is the reunion highlight.
