Carlsbad Caverns is the rare reunion park where the main attraction is underground, air-conditioned by nature, and equally appealing to a five-year-old and an eighty-year-old. The Big Room — an 8.2-acre limestone chamber 750 feet below the surface — is reached either by an elevator or by walking down through the Natural Entrance. The cave stays a steady 56°F year-round. From late May through October, the bat flight at dusk adds a second draw. The bottleneck for organizers is timing: every visitor needs a timed entry reservation booked through Recreation.gov, and ranger-led tours sell out weeks in advance. Plan early.

A 1.25-mile paved descent from the surface into the cave (~750 ft drop); strenuous on the way down, exits via elevator. Allow 1.5 hours.

Official source ↗Bat Flight Program (late May–October)
Roughly 400,000 Brazilian free-tailed bats exit the Natural Entrance at dusk; free outdoor amphitheater seating, ranger talk before the flight.
Official source ↗Visitor Center exhibits
Air-conditioned cave geology and bat exhibits; required check-in for all timed-entry tickets.
Official source ↗Walnut Canyon Desert Drive
A 9.5-mile gravel one-way loop through the Chihuahuan Desert above the cave; pull-outs, wildlife, and quiet views.

A spring-fed cottonwood oasis 7 miles south of the visitor center; group picnic tables and shade — the best surface lunch spot in the park.

Half-day undeveloped lantern tour of a wild cave system; strenuous, ages 8+, headlamps and flashlights only. Tickets via Recreation.gov.
Official source ↗Junior Ranger / Junior Cave Scientist programs

Good for
- Multi-generational groups — the Big Room is paved, mostly flat, and 56°F
- Mixed-mobility groups (elevator option for older relatives)
- Bat-flight summer reunions (late May through October)
- Pairing with Guadalupe Mountains (40 min away)
- Easy-to-plan park visits (one big experience, half-day commitment)
Practical logistics
- Closest Airports
- El Paso (ELP) ~2.5 hr · Midland-Odessa (MAF) ~2.5 hr · Lubbock (LBB) ~3.5 hr
- Group Lodging
- Carlsbad, NM (25 min from the visitor center) is the home base — full-service chain hotels (Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express, TownePlace Suites). White's City (3 mi from the park gate) has a single dated hotel; only useful for bat-flight nights with no driving.
- Cell Service
- Reliable in Carlsbad and at the visitor center; none inside the cave.
- Parking
- Visitor center lot fills mid-morning in summer; arrive by your timed-entry slot or 30 minutes earlier.
- Park Fee
- $15 per person (16+) for cave entry, valid 3 days. Timed-entry reservation ($1 fee) required for all visitors via Recreation.gov.
- Accessibility
- The visitor center, the elevator, and roughly two-thirds of the Big Room loop are wheelchair-accessible. The Natural Entrance Trail is not — it is a steep paved descent.

When to go
Late May through October if you want the bat flight; otherwise spring (March–April) and fall (September–November) for cooler surface temperatures and smaller crowds. The cave itself is 56°F year-round, so weather only affects the surface and the drive in. Avoid mid-July through August Saturdays — visitor center parking and timed-entry slots fill rapidly.
Best for your group size
Small group · 10–25
Groups of 10–25 fit in 4–6 rooms at a Carlsbad chain hotel. Book the Kings Palace tour as a single group reservation when timed-entry opens.
Medium group · 25–60
Groups of 25–60 should book a Carlsbad hotel block 4–6 months ahead (Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express, TownePlace Suites). Coordinate timed-entry slots in 15-minute windows so the group arrives together.
Large group · 60+
Groups of 60+ rarely visit Carlsbad as the full reunion base — the regional lodging is limited. Most large groups visit as a 1–2 day stop within a wider New Mexico or West Texas swing.

Reunion organizer tips
Book timed-entry reservations the day they release. Every visitor needs a timed-entry reservation through Recreation.gov; slots open 30 days ahead and the morning windows fill fast in summer. For a reunion, designate one organizer to book everyone the day reservations open.
Add a ranger-led tour for the older kids and adults. The Kings Palace tour (90 minutes) is the single best add-on; it sells out 4+ weeks ahead in summer. Book it the same day as your timed-entry tickets.
Use the elevator for older relatives, walk down with the kids. Split the group at the visitor center: less-mobile relatives take the elevator straight to the Big Room; younger relatives walk down through the Natural Entrance and meet up. Both groups exit by elevator.
Catch one bat flight if you visit May through October. Free outdoor amphitheater, no reservation needed; arrive 30 minutes early for seats. The exit lasts 30+ minutes once it starts. No phones or cameras allowed during the flight (radio interference disrupts the bats).
Base in Carlsbad, NM, not White's City. Carlsbad has the chain hotels, restaurants, and grocery stores you need for a multi-day reunion. The 25-minute drive to the park is easy.
Pair with Guadalupe Mountains. The Guadalupe Mountains visitor center is 40 minutes south. Many reunion groups split a 4-day trip between the two parks with the same Carlsbad hotel base.

Frequently asked
Do we need reservations for Carlsbad Caverns?
Yes. Every visitor needs a timed-entry reservation booked through Recreation.gov ($1 fee) plus the $15/person cave entry. Slots open 30 days ahead and summer mornings fill quickly. Designate one organizer to book the whole reunion the day reservations open.
Should we walk down the Natural Entrance or take the elevator?
Both, split by mobility. Less-mobile relatives ride the elevator (250 ft, 1 minute) directly to the Big Room. Younger relatives walk down the Natural Entrance Trail (1.25 mi paved, 750 ft descent) and meet at the underground rest area. Both groups exit by elevator.
When does the bat flight happen?
Late May through October at sunset. The 400,000 Brazilian free-tailed bats exit the Natural Entrance over a 30+ minute window. Free, no reservation; arrive 30 minutes early for amphitheater seats. Phones and cameras are not allowed during the flight.
Where should we stay for a Carlsbad Caverns reunion?
Carlsbad, NM, 25 minutes from the visitor center. It has reliable chain hotels (Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express, TownePlace Suites), restaurants, and grocery stores. White's City (3 mi from the gate) has a single dated hotel; only useful for bat-flight nights with no driving.
Is Carlsbad Caverns accessible for older relatives?
The visitor center, elevator, and roughly two-thirds of the Big Room paved loop are wheelchair-accessible. The Natural Entrance descent is not. Less-mobile relatives can comfortably reach and tour the main chamber without any climbing.
Can we pair Carlsbad Caverns with Guadalupe Mountains?
Yes — Guadalupe Mountains is 40 minutes south on US-62/180. Many reunion groups split a 4-day trip between the two parks using the same Carlsbad hotel base. They are very different parks (cave vs. mountain), which makes them a good pair.
