White Sands protects the world's largest gypsum dune field — 275 square miles of pure-white waves of sand in the Tularosa Basin of southern New Mexico. The park works for reunions in a way many desert parks do not: there is one road in (8 miles), one road out (the same), the dunes are kid-magic, and you can rent plastic sleds at the entrance to slide down them. Most reunion groups visit White Sands as a half-day or sunset visit from a base in Las Cruces or Alamogordo — there is no in-park lodging, and the park closes the road for nearby missile tests several times a month, so check the schedule before driving in.

Good for
- Half-day or single-day reunion stops (paired with Carlsbad or Big Bend)
- Kid-focused groups (sledding is a real reunion highlight)
- Photo-driven trips — sunset on the dunes is iconic
- Multi-generational groups (Interdune Boardwalk + sledding cover the spread)
- October–April reunions (summer is genuinely brutal)
Practical logistics
- Closest Airports
- El Paso (ELP) ~1.25 hr · Albuquerque (ABQ) ~3 hr
- Group Lodging
- No in-park lodging. Las Cruces, NM (45 min) has the most chain hotels and the largest reunion-block options. Alamogordo, NM (15 min from the park gate) has more limited chain hotels but is the closest base.
- Cell Service
- Reliable in Alamogordo and Las Cruces; spotty inside the park, none deep in the dunes.
- Parking
- Visitor center fills mid-day on summer weekends; arrive in the morning or after 4 PM. Sunset is the most crowded time year-round.
- Park Fee
- $25 per vehicle (7-day) or use an America the Beautiful annual pass.
- Accessibility
- Visitor center and Interdune Boardwalk are wheelchair-accessible. Picnic shelters along Dunes Drive are reachable by car. Dune trails are not.

When to go
Mid-October through April. November–March highs are typically 60s–70s°F; the dunes reflect heat, so even mild days feel warm. May–September brings 100°F+ with no shade — schedule any summer visit for the first hour after opening or the last 2 hours before sunset only. Check the park calendar for missile-test road closures before driving in.
Best for your group size
Small group · 10–25
Groups of 10–25 fit in 4–6 rooms at an Alamogordo or Las Cruces chain hotel; one half-day at the dunes is plenty.
Medium group · 25–60
Groups of 25–60 should base in Las Cruces (more hotel options) and convoy to White Sands as a single sunset trip with a reserved Roadrunner picnic area.
Large group · 60+
Groups of 60+ should base in Las Cruces and visit White Sands as a half-day. The Roadrunner and Yucca picnic areas are first-come; arrive early to claim shelters.

Reunion organizer tips
Plan as a half-day or sunset stop, not a full reunion. White Sands is small (8-mile road) and has no lodging or food. The cleanest reunion fit is a half-day visit out of an Alamogordo or Las Cruces base.
Check the closure calendar before you drive in. The park is surrounded by White Sands Missile Range and closes Dunes Drive several times a month for tests (typically 2–3 hours). The schedule is published a week ahead on the NPS site — check it before you commit a reunion plan.
Time the visit for sunset. The dunes glow pink and the temperature finally drops. Arrive 90 minutes before sunset, sled the kids out for an hour, then drive to the end of the road for the family photo as the sun goes down.
Buy sleds and wax at the visitor center. Plastic saucer sleds and a block of paste wax are sold at the gift shop with a buy-back program; this is non-negotiable equipment with kids and a reunion-photo guarantee.
Push hydration and sun protection. The white gypsum doubles UV reflection — sunburn is fast, even in winter. Hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, and one full water bottle per person per outing.
Pair with Carlsbad Caverns or Big Bend. Carlsbad is 3 hours east; Big Bend is 5 hours south. Many West Texas / southern New Mexico reunions string White Sands as a half-day inside a 5–7 day swing.

Frequently asked
Can we stay inside White Sands National Park?
No — there is no in-park lodging. Alamogordo, NM (15 min from the park gate) is the closest base; Las Cruces, NM (45 min) has more hotel options and group blocks. El Paso, TX (1.25 hr) is also a viable base for groups flying into ELP.
Why does the park close Dunes Drive sometimes?
White Sands shares space with White Sands Missile Range and closes Dunes Drive 2–3 hours at a time, several days a month, for missile tests. The schedule is published a week ahead on the NPS site — always check before driving in.
Can kids really sled the dunes?
Yes — plastic saucer sleds and paste wax are sold at the visitor center gift shop with a buy-back program. The steeper dunes near the end of Dunes Drive give the best ride. This is the single most photographed reunion activity in the park.
When is the best time to visit White Sands for a reunion?
November through March. The dunes reflect heat strongly, so summer (May–September) is dangerously hot even when official temperatures look manageable. If you must visit in summer, do the first hour after opening or the last 2 hours before sunset only.
Is White Sands accessible for older relatives?
The visitor center and the Interdune Boardwalk (paved, 0.4 mi) are accessible. Less-mobile relatives can also enjoy Dunes Drive entirely from the car, with picnic shelters reachable a few feet from the parking pull-outs.
Can we combine White Sands with Carlsbad Caverns?
Yes — Carlsbad Caverns is about 3 hours east. Many reunion groups build a 5–6 day swing through southern New Mexico hitting White Sands, Carlsbad, and Guadalupe Mountains with one or two hotel bases.
