Guadalupe Mountains contains the four highest peaks in Texas, including 8,751-ft Guadalupe Peak — the state high-point. The park is the exposed remains of a 260-million-year-old Permian reef, which is more interesting than it sounds: huge limestone walls dropping straight out of the Chihuahuan Desert, with surprise canyon woodlands tucked behind them. There is no in-park lodging and no gas station; the closest service is 35 miles away. For a reunion, this is rarely the centerpiece — it works as a 1–2 day add-on to a Carlsbad Caverns base (40 min north). Older relatives stay near the visitor center and the McKittrick Canyon overlooks; fit hikers tackle Guadalupe Peak.

When to go
Mid-October through mid-November for McKittrick Canyon's fall foliage — this is the park's best window. Spring (March–May) is also excellent, with mild temperatures. Summer is hot (90s°F at lower elevations) but bearable in the canyons. Winter brings cold winds at elevation but is otherwise quiet and clear.
Best for your group size
Small group · 10–25
Groups of 10–25 work well as a Carlsbad-based reunion with 1–2 day-trips down to Guadalupe — 40 minutes each way on US-62/180.
Medium group · 25–60
Groups of 25–60 should base in Carlsbad (4–6 months ahead at Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express, TownePlace Suites) and run a single big day-trip to McKittrick Canyon.
Large group · 60+
Groups of 60+ are unusual at Guadalupe Mountains. The park's lack of services makes it a bad full reunion base; treat it as a single day-trip activity.

Reunion organizer tips
Treat Guadalupe Mountains as a 1–2 day Carlsbad add-on. The park has no lodging, no gas, no restaurants. The cleanest reunion plan is a Carlsbad Caverns base (40 min north) with one or two day-trips down to Guadalupe.
Time the trip for fall foliage if you can. Mid-October through mid-November is the single best window — McKittrick Canyon's bigtooth maples turn red and gold and the trail crowds with photographers. Book Carlsbad lodging for that window 4–6 months ahead.
Split the group by mobility. Fit relatives can do the Guadalupe Peak Trail (8.4 mi, 3,000 ft, full day starting at dawn). Less-mobile relatives can stay at Pine Springs or drive to McKittrick Canyon and walk the flat 1–2 miles to the day-use area. Plan to meet for dinner back in Carlsbad.
Bring water, food, gas, and a flashlight. The park has no gas station and no real food beyond the Pine Springs Campground store basics. Stock up in Carlsbad before driving down.
Watch the wind. Guadalupe Peak is one of the windiest spots in the U.S. — sustained 40+ mph winds are common above 7,000 ft. If your group has Peak hikers, check the wind forecast the day before; cancel if it is rough.
Add a sunset at El Capitan. The El Capitan overlook on US-62/180 just south of the visitor center is a 5-minute stop with the park's signature view. Worth a sunset detour even if your group does not hike.

Frequently asked
Can we stay inside Guadalupe Mountains?
No. The park has no lodging, no gas, and no restaurants beyond a small campground store. Most reunion groups base in Carlsbad, NM (40 min north on US-62/180) and visit Guadalupe as a 1–2 day-trip.
When is the fall foliage in McKittrick Canyon?
Mid-October through mid-November — typically peaking the last week of October. The bigtooth maples, oaks, and walnuts in the canyon are the best fall color in West Texas. Plan for crowded weekends in this window; weekdays are calmer.
Is Guadalupe Peak a reasonable reunion hike?
For fit relatives only — it is 8.4 miles roundtrip with 3,000 ft of elevation gain, exposed to wind, and takes 6–9 hours. Start at dawn. Less-mobile relatives should stay below at Pine Springs or McKittrick Canyon.
Can we combine Guadalupe Mountains with Carlsbad Caverns?
Yes — that is the natural pairing. They are 40 minutes apart on US-62/180, and the parks are very different (cave vs. mountain). Most reunion groups do 2 nights in Carlsbad with one day in each park.
How is cell service at Guadalupe Mountains?
Spotty around the Pine Springs visitor center, and essentially none on the trails or in McKittrick Canyon. Plan offline meeting points and times before driving in.
What is the closest airport to Guadalupe Mountains?
El Paso (ELP) is closest at 2 hours. Midland-Odessa (MAF) is 2.5 hours and often has cheaper fares. Most reunion groups fly into one and out of the other to combine Carlsbad, Guadalupe, and Big Bend.
