Mount Rushmore is the iconic 60-foot granite portrait of Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln carved into the Black Hills, sculpted by Gutzon Borglum and his crew between 1927 and 1941. The memorial sits at the heart of South Dakota's most-visited corridor, drawing 2 million visitors a year. For a reunion, Mount Rushmore is rarely the trip itself — it is a half-day showpiece inside a Black Hills itinerary that combines Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, Wind Cave, Crazy Horse Memorial, and Badlands. The Avenue of Flags photo, the evening lighting ceremony in summer, and the half-mile Presidential Trail make it a strong group anchor for one big multi-generational stop.

When to go
Mid-May through September. Summer evening lighting ceremonies are the marquee experience and run only Memorial Day through late September. October has good weather and far fewer crowds but no evening ceremony. Winter visits are peaceful but most surrounding businesses close.
Best for your group size
Small group · 10–25
Groups of 10–25 fit in a Custer State Park lodge wing or 2-3 Custer/Keystone vacation rentals; sit together in the amphitheater for the lighting ceremony.
Medium group · 25–60
Groups of 25–60 should book a State Game Lodge or Sylvan Lake Lodge block plus overflow at a Custer hotel; reserve a private dining room for the reunion dinner.
Large group · 60+
Groups of 60+ are best served by Rapid City hotels (Holiday Inn Rushmore Plaza, Hotel Alex Johnson) with reunion-size meeting space; Mount Rushmore is a coordinated half-day field trip.

Reunion organizer tips
Plan one Mount Rushmore evening together. The lighting ceremony at dusk is the universal reunion-trip highlight — patriotic music, ranger talk, flag retirement, then full illumination. Arrive 60 minutes early for amphitheater seats together.
Don't make Rushmore the trip. A Black Hills reunion is Rushmore plus Custer State Park, plus Wind Cave or Badlands, plus Crazy Horse. Most groups visit Rushmore twice (once daytime, once evening) and spend the rest of their time elsewhere in the Hills.
Stay in Custer, not Keystone, for older relatives. Keystone is right at the gate but is wall-to-wall touristy motels. Custer is 25 minutes south, has more charm, walks to nicer restaurants, and is closer to Custer State Park, Wind Cave, and Crazy Horse.
Book the early dinner at State Game Lodge for the reunion night. It is 30 minutes from Rushmore in Custer State Park, has historic charm, and lets you transition naturally to the evening lighting ceremony.
Grab the Junior Ranger book on arrival. The Rushmore book is one of the better in the system — kids work through the carving process, presidential history, and the Sculptor's Studio. The badge ceremony is a nice closing reunion moment.
Plan around the parking garage cost. The annual America the Beautiful pass does NOT cover Rushmore parking. Budget ~$10 per car per day; passes are good for the calendar year if you are visiting twice.

Frequently asked
How long do you need at Mount Rushmore?
Half a day for the visitor center and Presidential Trail; one evening for the lighting ceremony. Most reunions visit twice — once daytime, once evening. The memorial itself is small and walkable in 2-3 hours.
Where should we stay?
Custer (25 min south, more charm, closer to Custer State Park and Wind Cave) for most reunions. Keystone (right at the gate) for groups who want shortest commute. Rapid City for big groups needing reunion-size hotel blocks.
Is the lighting ceremony worth it?
Yes — it is the most universally beloved Mount Rushmore experience and runs free every summer night. The amphitheater fills 30-60 minutes ahead, so plan for an early arrival and dinner before, not after.
Is Mount Rushmore wheelchair-accessible?
The Grand View Terrace, visitor center, Sculptor's Studio, and Carvers Marketplace are fully accessible. The Presidential Trail has many stairs but the upper section near the Grand View Terrace is wheelchair-friendly. There is also accessible amphitheater seating for the evening ceremony.
Do annual park passes cover Mount Rushmore parking?
No — Mount Rushmore parking is run by a concessionaire, not NPS. The America the Beautiful annual pass does not cover the parking fee (~$10/day). Parking passes are good for the full calendar year if you save the receipt.
How does Mount Rushmore compare to Crazy Horse?
Mount Rushmore is finished, free to enter (parking only), and run by NPS. Crazy Horse is in-progress, charges admission (~$15/adult), and is privately funded. Most reunions do both for the contrast — Rushmore in the morning, Crazy Horse after lunch.
