Wind Cave is one of the longest and most complex caves in the world, with more than 160 mapped miles of passages packed into a tight footprint underneath the southern Black Hills. Above ground, the park protects 33,000+ acres of mixed-grass prairie and ponderosa pine forest where bison, elk, pronghorn, and prairie dogs are easy to spot from the road. For a reunion, Wind Cave works best as a half-day stop inside a larger Black Hills itinerary — pair it with Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, and Badlands and you have a full week of scenery without ever driving more than 90 minutes between stops.

NPS-7 and Highway 87 cross open prairie where free-roaming bison herds and prairie-dog towns are visible from the car.
Official source ↗Rankin Ridge Lookout drive and short hike

A 62-site campground a mile from the visitor center; reservable in summer and big enough to absorb a small reunion.
Official source ↗Cold Brook Canyon Trail
A 3.5-mile out-and-back through prairie and a small canyon; quiet, often empty, and good for older kids.
Official source ↗Bison Flats overlook
A pull-off near the south end of the park where photographers gather at golden hour for prairie-and-bison shots.
Official source ↗Day-trip pairing: Jewel Cave National Monument
Sister cave 30 minutes west — third-longest cave in the world. Two cave tours in one day works well for spelunker-curious teens.
Official source ↗Day-trip pairing: Custer State Park
Adjacent state park with the famous Wildlife Loop Road, lodges, and fishing lakes — many reunions base here and visit Wind Cave for a half-day.

Mid-May through September. June and early September are sweet spots — full tour schedule, fewer crowds, mild prairie weather. Cave temperature is a steady 53°F year-round, so bring a light jacket even in August.
Best for your group size
Small group · 10–25
Groups of 10–25 fit in a single Custer State Park lodge wing or a 2-3 cabin cluster at Sylvan Lake. Reserve cave tour tickets together.
Medium group · 25–60
Groups of 25–60 should split across Custer State Park lodges plus a vacation rental in Custer; book State Game Lodge 9-12 months ahead.
Large group · 60+
Groups of 60+ are best served by Custer or Hot Springs hotels with shared meeting space; Wind Cave itself stays a half-day stop in the agenda.

Reunion organizer tips
Treat Wind Cave as a half-day, not a destination. Most reunion organizers regret booking lodging right at the park — the town of Custer or Hot Springs gives you better dinner options and faster access to Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse.
Buy cave tour tickets first thing. Tours sell out by mid-morning in July. Send one early-riser to the visitor center at 8 AM with a list of names; the rest of the group can join at the tour time.
Pick the right tour for the oldest knee in your group. Garden of Eden (1 hr, 150 stairs) is the easiest. Natural Entrance (1.25 hr, 300 stairs) is fine for active adults. Skip Wild Cave Tour for a reunion — it is a 4-hour crawl.
Pair with Custer State Park's Wildlife Loop. The 18-mile loop has higher bison density than Wind Cave and is the kid-favorite drive of any Black Hills trip.
Build in a slow morning. After the cave tour, plan a low-key picnic at Elk Mountain Campground or the visitor center lawn — older relatives appreciate the breather before the next park.

Frequently asked
Do I need reservations for Wind Cave tours?
NPS sells most cave tour tickets in person at the visitor center on the day of the tour. They sell out by mid-morning in July and August, so send a designated person at 8 AM with a list of everyone in the group.
Where should we stay for a Wind Cave reunion?
There is no in-park lodge. Most reunions base out of Custer State Park lodges (Sylvan Lake Lodge or State Game Lodge) or vacation rentals in Custer or Hot Springs. From Custer it is a 25-minute drive to the Wind Cave visitor center.
Is Wind Cave good for older relatives?
The visitor center is fully accessible. The Garden of Eden cave tour uses an elevator and has roughly 150 stairs spread across the tour — fine for most older adults who can manage stairs at a steady pace. Skip cave tours entirely if walking is a real limitation; the prairie wildlife drives are great from a car.
Can we combine Wind Cave with Mount Rushmore and Badlands?
Yes — this is the most popular Black Hills reunion pattern. Plan 4-5 nights in Custer, hit Wind Cave + Custer State Park one day, Mount Rushmore + Crazy Horse another, and a Badlands day trip (90 minutes east) on a third.
How cold is the cave?
Wind Cave stays at a steady 53°F year-round. Bring a light jacket or hoodie even in August.
What does the cave tour cost?
Roughly $14-$18 per adult depending on the tour, with discounts for kids 6-16. There is no entrance fee for the park itself. America the Beautiful annual passes do not cover cave tours.
