Theodore Roosevelt National Park preserves the painted badlands of western North Dakota where a young Theodore Roosevelt ranched in the 1880s. It is split into a South Unit anchored by the gateway town of Medora and a quieter North Unit 70 miles north — both feature scenic loop drives, free-roaming bison, wild horses, and prairie-dog towns. The park is one of the least-crowded major national parks in the lower 48, which makes it a strong reunion choice for groups who want big scenery without Yellowstone-level crowds. Medora's small-town infrastructure (lodging, restaurants, the Medora Musical) makes logistics easy.

South Unit Scenic Loop Drive
36-mile paved loop with overlooks, prairie-dog towns, and frequent bison sightings — the single most-visited experience in the park.
Official source ↗North Unit Scenic Drive
14-mile out-and-back along the Little Missouri River canyon; quieter than the South Unit and the best place to spot longhorn steer.
Official source ↗Maltese Cross Cabin tour
Roosevelt's restored 1883 ranch cabin sits behind the South Unit visitor center; 15-minute self-guided tour, indoor and free.
Official source ↗Painted Canyon overlook
Roadside overlook with a small visitor contact station off I-94 — many reunions stop here for the welcome group photo before checking in.
Official source ↗Wild horse viewing
The South Unit is one of only two NPS sites with free-roaming wild horses; mid-loop overlooks are the most reliable spotting points.
Official source ↗Boicourt Overlook walk
A short 0.4-mile out-and-back to a panoramic badlands view; flat enough for older relatives and strollers.
Official source ↗Junior Ranger program
Free activity book at either visitor center; complete it for a Theodore Roosevelt Junior Ranger badge — kids 4-13.
Official source ↗Medora Musical (gateway town)
Outdoor amphitheater musical that runs nightly in summer in Medora — kitschy, Roosevelt-themed, and a longtime reunion-night highlight.
Official source ↗Pitchfork Steak Fondue (Medora)
Pre-musical steak dinner cooked outdoors on pitchforks; pricey but a popular reunion-dinner option in Medora.
Official source ↗Cottonwood Campground
76-site campground along the Little Missouri in the South Unit; reservable in summer and large enough for a tent-camping reunion subgroup.

When to go
Late May through early October. June and September are ideal — warm but not hot, low humidity, full Medora summer programming. July and August can hit the 90s in the badlands.
Best for your group size
Small group · 10–25
Groups of 10–25 fit comfortably in the Rough Riders Hotel or a Medora vacation rental cluster. Book the Pitchfork Steak Fondue private group seating.
Medium group · 25–60
Groups of 25–60 should split across the AmericInn, Badlands Motel, and one or two rentals — book 6+ months ahead. The Medora Musical can hold a full reunion in adjacent rows if booked early.
Large group · 60+
Groups of 60+ generally use the Medora Convention Center or Bully Pulpit Golf Course event space; Dickinson hotels (30 min east) absorb overflow.

Reunion organizer tips
Base out of Medora, not the park. Medora is a tiny gateway town packed with reunion-friendly amenities (Rough Riders Hotel, the Pitchfork Steak Fondue, the Medora Musical) and is right at the South Unit entrance.
Build the trip around the Medora Musical. The Friday or Saturday night musical is the single best group activity in the area — book tickets together as soon as the season schedule drops in March.
Don't skip the North Unit. Most groups stay South-Unit-only and miss the river canyon scenery 70 miles north. A North Unit half-day with a picnic at Riverbend Overlook is worth the drive.
Plan for slow loop-drive pacing. The 36-mile South Unit loop sounds short — but with bison stops and overlooks it eats a full half-day. Give it the afternoon, not just an hour.
Schedule Painted Canyon as the welcome stop. It's the first overlook off I-94 and a perfect 'we're here' family photo before checking into Medora.

Frequently asked
Where should we stay for a Theodore Roosevelt reunion?
Medora is the obvious base for the South Unit — Rough Riders Hotel, Badlands Motel, AmericInn, and a growing supply of vacation rentals. For a North-Unit-focused trip, stay in Watford City (35 min from the entrance).
How crowded does it get?
Theodore Roosevelt averages roughly 700K visitors per year — about a sixth of Yellowstone. Even on July 4 weekend you can find empty overlooks. The Medora Musical is the only thing that consistently sells out.
Is the Medora Musical worth it for a reunion?
Yes — it is a near-universal reunion highlight. Outdoor amphitheater, professional cast, Roosevelt-themed numbers and a closing fireworks moment most nights. Book seats in adjacent rows when the season schedule drops (typically March).
Should we drive to the North Unit?
If you have 3+ nights, yes. The North Unit is 70 miles north (about 1.25 hours) and has the most dramatic Little Missouri river-canyon views. Riverbend Overlook is a short walk and worth the drive on its own.
When does the Medora season open and close?
Most Medora businesses (Pitchfork Fondue, the musical, gift shops) run from Memorial Day weekend through mid-September. Outside that window the park itself is open but the town is mostly closed.
Can we see wild horses?
Yes — the South Unit is one of only two NPS sites with free-roaming wild horses. Mid-loop overlooks (especially around Buck Hill and Painted Canyon) are the most reliable spotting points.
